Tried dampening the springs with a sponge. Didn't make any difference. Since it is common to every guitar I have in that model (s470), I think it may either be the construction of the trem or the placement of the neck pickup. The fact that it only does it to the neck pickup and not the bridge suggests it is the neck pickup placement. I wonder if the new 24 fret models have cured the problem, if that is the case?

As an owner of an original `91 S-470 (and I owned 2 more over the years) and somebody that has watched this unfold, I can say with significant confidence I feel that it is the new ZR trem systems. I still don`t know what exactly Ibanez did wrong, but they screwed up on some detail that somehow resulted in all S-470s without an Edge sounding like a fizzy, squawky ****
AS far as the OT: I`d like to weigh in, but I`m strongly biased towards Jackson by default and I haven`t played an RG since I sold my 2077XL, sorry.
But then again there`s always the other angle: I actually like Sabers, don`t generally like RGs, and like the DK-2M as well.... which one could interpret to mean "If you prefer sabers, definitely give the Jackson a shot"... I`m not sure if I`m onboard with the logic, but if it gets you to try a Jackson who cares?

I have a Jackson DK2M that I use for 80's hair metal. I do like the Jackson. I guess when I think of a guitar set up purely for shred, I think of my Ibanez.
I do note that the only pro player I know of that plays one of the S models (Herman Li) does not have the ZR trem on his signature model. He said he liked the sound of the Edge trem better.

I've temporarily bought an Ibanez RG450 and replaced the pickups with an Air Norton and Air Zone, just to see if I mesh with it. I am liking the tone much better than the S470. Still don't know if I want to blow 1500 dollars on the Prestige version though. The Jackson DK2Ms are a bit more than half the price, and pretty good guitars. I haven't played one of the new versions that are made in Mexico. I do like some of the upgrades they have made to the DK2M, but NOT the 3-bolt neck.

I am a 50 year old player .I got my DK2M (Snow white) in 2010.Picked it up used off ebay for $399. I have been playing since 1970 and have owned many premium axes over the decades. I must say this guitar is possibly my favorite guitar I have ever owned. It just does some magic for me.

I ended up liking the RG450 so much that I bought an RG655 as a better version. I love the RG655, but I'm keeping the RG450 as an every day player to try pickup changes on. I doesn't have the fit and finish of the RG655, but it sounds as good as it does. I didn't like the Air Norton at all after playing it for a while. I've traded it out for a PAF Pro which I like much better.
