Jake E Lee's Tone SLAYS!!

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
I'm chilling here at work, and I'm listening to Badlands' "Dusk" album. This album is great! All of the rhythm tracks were played live, and they were totally locked in when this was tracked! Jake was using an ESP thru a Budda 1/2 stack and his tone positively smokes on this album! All of the songs are top notch, esp The River and Ride the Jack; Ray Gillen's voice is flooring me! He has so much feeling! I would recommend this album to anyone into killer hard rock/metal!!

Re: Jake E Lee's Tone SLAYS!!

I LOVED Badlands first album. It's a closet classic, and I still listen to it to this day. I didn't care for Voodoo Highway. I've never heard of this "Dusk" album you speak of. Did it come after Voodoo?

I agree, his tone kicks and Gillan's voice kicks. Unfortunately, I think Ray has passed away. I wish Jake would come back tho.

Re: Jake E Lee's Tone SLAYS!!

sounds good

i think ill look into Badlands

Why did he get (Jake) get kicked outta Ozzy's band?

Re: Jake E Lee's Tone SLAYS!!

so wait, what was their first album? Dusk? Isn't dusk a live album? What should i look into?

Re: Jake E Lee's Tone SLAYS!!

Lemme 'splain!!

BADLANDS was formed out of ex- Ozzy and Sabbath members. They included Ray Gillen (vox), Jake E Lee (gtr), Greg Chaisson (bass), Jeff Martin (drums). They pretty much shed their metal stuff and chose to play Zepplin-inspired hard rock, with very technical solos.

The 1st album is self-titled and came out in '89. I'll never forget my older brother tossing me the CD and saying, "here's your favourite new band". How right he was!

The 2nd album was Voodoo Highway, and I personally love it, esp the song "Whiskey Dusk" and the title track.

Ray Gillen died in '93 at the age of 32, due to HIV complications. The world of rock and metal is not the same without him!!

In 2000 ('99 in Japan thru Pony Canyon), there was one posthumous Badlands release, Dusk. Jake decided not to alter the original recordings in any way, and all of the live tracks are just they way they where played in the studio when they were tracked; a testimony to great rock, to my ears, at least.

Their albums are out of print now, but do yourself a favour and track them down; WELL worth the effort!

Uh, what JammerMatt just said ... :)

See the post above his for the long-winded version!!!

Re: Jake E Lee's Tone SLAYS!!

Badlands is the most underated band to come out of the 90's!!! I was lucky enough to see them live. The stage was only about a foot high and I stood right in front of Jake. Excellent show!! Excellent Band!!

I've got a ton of live MP3's of theirs.

P.S. Jeff Martin wasn't the first drummer.

Re: Jake E Lee's Tone SLAYS!!

Jake E. Lee is a badass, who totally knows Marshall tone!
I always thought Ray Gillen was older when he died, like over 35? I dunno.
People scoff at Jake's tone in Ozzy, but go back and listen to those solos
on Bark at the Moon! Ozzy isn't famous cause of his wife. He's famous
because of Iommi, Rhoads, Lee, and Wylde. Never confuse that fact!!!!!

It's really sad that Gillen died, because like Jolly said, Badlands was one of the best bands of the 90's. I want to see Jake come back. He's very reclusive outside of the Japanese market. They F'in WORSHIP him in Japan.
Here, the guitar magazines barely even mention him, but will give a whole page to Good Charlotte, or some other such crap. Jake needs a new singer,
a new band with killer material, and to get on a tour with someone like
Van Halen, AC/DC, or Lynch. He's one of the last "real deal" rock players.
I need to get Jolly or Twilight to burn me some CD's. Badlands is probably not easy to find, since all the Japanese "guitar kids :13: " bought it all up for their collections.

Re: Jake E Lee's Tone SLAYS!!

I saw Ray sing for Sabbath in '86, the 'Seventh Star' tour. Great voice for Sabbath. Apparently he was picked out a a bar band in NJ when Glen Hughes (another great vocalist & bassist) couldn't sing the Sabbath stuff properly.

Re: Jake E Lee's Tone SLAYS!!

I've got a copy of Voodoo Highway. I have loved that album since I heard it. Very bluesy and lots of metal influence in there too. Jake E Lee is THE MAN!!! I'd love to get my hands on a copy of Dusk and the first album too.

Re: Jake E Lee's Tone SLAYS!!

The first Badlands CD is one of my all time favorites. Still listen to to once in a while.

I saw them twice. First time was at the "Cat Club" in NYC they were on the first tour. To this day one of the best shows I've ever seen!!!

I saw them on the voodoo highway tour at L'amours in Brooklyn the next year. Great show but not as good as the first. The second drummer wasnt as good as Eric Singer. He even messed up so bad they had to start a song over again...

Sorry Twighlight, didn't mean to hijack your thread. :hijacked: We must've been posting almost simultaneously.... I was SUPPOSED to be working, but don't tell.

I agree w/ Joneser. I loved Jake w/Ozzy and I really liked his tone, and Ozzy would have been nowhere without his hired guns. I really liked Ultimate Sin, and wish Jake would hit the US again. I don't know what happened with he and Oz, but I'm guessing that he wasn't into the whole Ozzy wildman scene... he seems more of an introvert, but that's just me guessing with absolutely no inside knowledge.

I'll be combing the used bins for "Dusk."

Re: Jake E Lee's Tone SLAYS!!

I was overseas in Europe when Badlands was out and about, and my bro sent me the CD. Were they popular at all Stateside?

They weren't really popular at all "commercially" here. However, they were rather popular with people who admired and respected good musicianship.

Re: Jake E Lee's Tone SLAYS!!

Yeah , Badlands were great , I was just listening to a comp. cd of theirs the other day . You didn`t mention that Eric Singer played drums on the 1st album then Jeff Martin came in for Voodoo Highway :13:

Re: Jake E Lee's Tone SLAYS!!

Badlands was badass. I saw them at a dive bar in Brockton, MA that was half empty and I was basically standing 3 feet from Jake E. with his guitar at about my eye level. I saw him doing stuff with his thumb past the 12th fret that I am still trying to figure out.

Re: Jake E Lee's Tone SLAYS!!

Huh I'll have to take a listen to them again. I thought Jake had terrible tone with Oz, when I saw him live it was even worse than the record but his playing was really good.

Ray was playing with some local guys for awhile and I got to see him in a small rehearsal place one night, man that cat had lungs. If you check out some of The Cult stuff Ray sings back up (err yeah, I think you might be hearing a little more than backups IMO), I think he did that for several bands he had such a classic Rock voice. Sad deal what happened to him, the wrong girl apparently came in to his life.

I'll look for the Badlands stuff for sure.
