Japanese foto flame strat

Hey everyone! So I'm in the market for a new strat, and I really like the look of the Japanese foto flame series. What kind of value would you put on one in amazing shape? There is one of my local cl, and he upgraded the pickups to duncan sl1s, he wants a straight trade for my les paul studio, what do you think?

Re: Japanese foto flame strat

Year on the LP studio?
And is it one with a dull, or, more aesthetically pleasing paint job/finish?

Just seeing the strat pics, I'd say hell yah

Re: Japanese foto flame strat

Les paul studio is 2004, full gloss. One blemish, clear coat on the back of the headstock chipped off, size of half a dime.
What would you put the value of the strat at?

Re: Japanese foto flame strat

that strat is nice
whats your lester look like?

I'm a big fan of blue flame

Re: Japanese foto flame strat

IMO, dented Gibson is worth more than plastic-coated MIJ Strat - even after Duncan pickup upgrade.

Re: Japanese foto flame strat

That is a beautiful strat I'd trade anything for it...

Re: Japanese foto flame strat

I really like the look of the Japanese foto flame series.

That's good because the look is its chief attribute.

Nobody can stop you striking a deal if you want to but, surely, the Gibson has greater monetary worth than the Fender. At least haggle for some cash difference.

This forum is full of stories, posted by members, belatedly regretting that they let such and such guitar go. I would hate you to join their ranks.

If you are going to trade, trade upwards. Get yourself an American-made Stratocaster (or derivative design).

Re: Japanese foto flame strat

I've been searching for an American strat for trade. I can't seem to find anyone interested, and I know it's completely up to others what to trade for, I just can't seem to find anyone looking. Only offer I got for an American was a beat up black American Standard, no name pickups, with a bag and I passed without hesitation. If I could find an American special, or even a highway one I'd be happy. Doesn't need to be fancy, just a nice strat.

Re: Japanese foto flame strat

H1, yes. Am Spl, avoid. "California Series", avoid.

In my opinion, if you can afford to buy the blue Strat and keep the Gibson for a while, that would be the wisest move. Give yourself time to decide which guitar suits you better. Sell the one that you could manage without.

Re: Japanese foto flame strat

I'm really hoping for just a trade. Cash isn't too bountiful around the holidays as I'm sure you know. If there was cash with the foto flame I'd jump on it, but he won't budge it seems. His loss. Don't happen to have an American strat you're looking to move do ya? Haha

Re: Japanese foto flame strat

I'm with Funk, there's no way I'd swap that studio for that Strat. It's a nice looking Strat for sure and I recall them being pretty darn decent, but not a fair trade IMO unless you get some cash back.

Re: Japanese foto flame strat

Sorry, no.

You had better read this post before Reggie deletes it.

Re: Japanese foto flame strat

Thanks for the responses guys, it helps a ton. I'll just keep my eyes peeled for a good American somewhere around

Re: Japanese foto flame strat

That Les Paul is worth almost twice as much as that Strat, I would think.

Re: Japanese foto flame strat

You can play it before you decide correct? Do that after determining the used value of each instrument to make sure the value is similar enough that the trade is fair. That simple. Nobody here can really decide for you.

Re: Japanese foto flame strat

Lots of the top end MIJ strats I've seen on ebay had price tags of between 1100 and 1700 dollars brand new. Some but not most have upgraded pickups, the rest are all MIJ pickups. Many nice looking and described MIJ Fender strats do sell for less. The blue strat you shared looks really nice and with the Duncan pups I'm sure it sounds great too. The MIJ Fenders have many more 7.15 radius fretboards available too.
Good luck!

Re: Japanese foto flame strat

Do after market pickups really increase the value of a guitar at all? They cost money, yes, but it's hugely preference. They say all stock cars sell for more than modified ones.

Regarding the trade, a simple question: what have they sold for on ebay lately?

Re: Japanese foto flame strat

I have one of those foto flame strats and I wouldn't make the trade. If left out in bright lights, they tend to fade into a gray-ish green. I recently stripped mine and the color was much more vivid under the pickguard. Even in mint condition, I wouldn't spend more than $500 or so on one. I think I got mine for $350 or so a long time ago.
