Japanese made messed-up production

Re: Japanese made messed-up production

I dont use the terms out of respect, my point is there is absolutely NO logic behind it.Its all sentimental BS.

I certainly hope we can all stop using the terms Brit, Pol, Aussie, etc too...they were all involved in WW2 as well, and thus should garner the same respect, no?

You really don't get it, do you? Do you at least understand why we don't use the n-word, or is that "sentimental BS", too?

From Wikipedia:

Jap is an English abbreviation of the word "Japanese." Today it is generally regarded as an ethnic slur, although English-speaking countries differ in the degree to which they consider the term offensive. In the United States, Japanese Americans have come to find the term controversial or offensive, even when used as an abbreviation.[1] In the past, Jap was not considered primarily offensive; however, during and after the events of World War II, the term became derogatory.[2]

the N word is a slight based on heritage. Not a shortening of a countrys name.

You cannot logically argue the term jap is more offensive than brit or pol or aussie. Its no different, until people let their emotions take away the logic.

I'm not saying it's inoffensive to say Jap...it IS to many people. I'm saying there is no logical reason it should be...it's emotional backlash.

Logic based on very real emotional backlash involving real people. It's all fun and games until someone with a position of power over you uses a word -- or makes one up -- and persistently uses it in conjunction with activities used systematically to marginalize you.

Pol? What about Polack? Does that one make you feel good?

I know some are going to be hold-outs, but I and some others find it offensive. It's like calling Germans "Krauts" or "Huns". There are other music-related forums on the net where, if you use it, someone will be on you with both feet in just a few posts. It's an unnecessary slight that can be avoided with an extra second of typing, but do what you want.
I guess it's offensive if I call someone from the U.K. a Brit then.

Re: Japanese made messed-up production

OK, this is boring, you are just looking to get offended, because you are incapable of looking at it unemotionally, which is all I'm saying..lack of emotion turns the term from horribly offensive to completely innocent.

pol is short for polish...I said nothing about polack..you did. Dont put words in my mouth because you are getting pissy emotional...bye

Come on you guys just drop the subject, you're going to get this thread closed down

Re: Japanese made messed-up production

You're ignoring that fact that the British were our allies. That we didn't round up Australians in the United States and put them in camps. That we didn't drop hydrogen bombs on Poland. That two generations of American autoworkers saw their jobs go overseas when people started buying Japanese cars. How much weight can a word carry? Plenty. Listen to old white American guys say it. Or maybe you have, and that's the problem.

I knew this would be a tough audience. Ask some Japanese people if the term "Jap" offends them. Better still, ask some older Japanese Americans who were living in the U.S. during WWII.

Humans are emotional creatures. You can't blame them -- or me, or you -- for getting offended for emotional reasons.

My prediction: this thread wil get closed down before we see any guitar pics, gee thanks guys.

I did not put words in your mouth. I suggested another word that should "mean" the same thing to your logical mind. Does it mean the same thing? Or does a little thing called connotation exist within your logical framework?

You're welcome. I've been sick of seeing that word here for ages, and I finally had to say something. But I know my audience, so I was keeping my expectations humble.

STFU already. What does any of this have to do with guitars?

The really sad part is the reaction isnt cause they are truly offended its more just a reason to flame and cry righteous indignation.

Not saying anything about the offensiveness about the term more just stating that these other forums that are quick to react to this sort thing arent compelled as much by their feeling offended as they are compelled by their desire to be combative.

In the end there are many terms that could be considered derogatory by many different people but I think the difference is how it used. In this particular post the term jap was used as an abbreviation it wasnt being directed towards any particular person with malicious intent.

What do racial slurs in the middle of a post ever have to do with guitars?

Ummm yeah the OP's post didnt promise anything in the way of pics so I think your digging for gold in a coal mine thread closed or not.

Gotta hand it to the OP though who would have guessed that a space cadet post like that would have gotten this good of a reaction.
