Re: Jay Turser quality
I agree somewhat, and disagree somewhat, there are TONS of cheap quality guitars on the market, just as there are plenty of high price POS's out there as well. A $100 axe isnt going to be a shredders dream, but if its solid, and has a decent neck, hardware and electronics can be easily and affordably upgraded, I have a custom made Warrior brand guitar, and for the moment its losing all my attention to an epiphone LP classicI got for $300 with HSC , I originally bought it for my son, but it made a huge impression on me, so I got him something else, took the epi to the luthier that built my warrior, told him what I got and what I wanted done, he looked at me like I was crazy, I showed him the guitar, and just from the look of it he understood, he gave it a good inspection, and agreed its was a solid beautiful guitar, the grover tuners seem pretty solid, so I replaced the bridge, and had all the electronics gutted, new pots, caps, jack, switch, A500T at the bridge and a Burstbucker pro at the neck, after all that and a proper setup, it plays like a dream, and sound absolutely killer, he even played it for several hours after he finished, and has a couple folks who want to do the same thing, I now have an axe that looks, plays, and sounds like a few grand, for less than $500.
I know its a little different than what he's asking about, but if he digs the look, and the neck is true, some new tuners and a decent pup could give him something very adequte to bang chords out on, and good luthier can make just about anything playable, mine has amazed me several times, even with his work on higher end guitars, you seldom find anything freah off the shelf properly setup these days.
I'm really having trouble understanding you.
You're looking at all these $100 guitars and beginner guitars and asking about wood quality?
There's an old addage that is truer in the guitar world than any where else, You get what you pay for. If you want a $100 guitar, expect it to be like one.
Instead of getting all these beginner guitars and starting all these projects, save up all the money that you'll spend and still be unhappy, and buy a NICE guitar. Go to guitar center or some ma and pop shop, don't look at price tags and play just about everything. You'll learn a lot about the divide between the lowend and the highend and learn what good quality woods sound like. When you find what you like, save up until you can buy exactly that guitar, don't settle for a copy or some project intended to be similar.
If you can't afford to do that, then you'll have to wait till you have a job. But at least you'll have some direction. And don't judge things because they don't look like something you designed on some virtual builder. Judge them by their tone. Being unique is one thing, sacrificing tone for looks is being a poser.
