Jazz bridge with alnico 8 magnet

Re: Jazz bridge with alnico 8 magnet

I have one in my LP copy and it took the shrillness away that I was having while giving a masculine vocal quality, like Pavarotti singing, but without being obnoxious.

Still, very PAFish sounding. It just LOVES blues soaring leads, although actually excelling in the clean dept.

Used with 500K pots and .022 caps.

HTH,

Re: Jazz bridge with alnico 8 magnet

I haven't tried a JazzB myself, but I've used some A8's, and I think Kojak's description is accurate. A8's can correct a lot of faults in bridge PU's.

Re: Jazz bridge with alnico 8 magnet

Lt. Kojak, do you know what the DC resistance of the jazzB with the A8 measures? Can it pull off metal tones? I've heard some clips of the regular jazzB doing metal and it seems to do quite well. The Pavarotti description makes me want to try this!

Resistance doesn't change with mag swaps, but output does; two different things.

Re: Jazz bridge with alnico 8 magnet

I just acquired a Jazz bridge and tried it with several mags. With the stock A5 it had sharp (close to piercing) highs, tight solid mids, and a fairly fat low end. An A2 put it somewhere between an A2P and Pearly Gates. An A8 took the edge off the highs, kept the mids tight but added a lot of punch to them, and gave the lows more thump. As always, the output with the A8 was noticeably higher, so I moved it an extra 1/8" below the strings (that's a big distance WRT typical pickup height.)

I also tried a C8 in the same guitar. Compared to the C8, the Jazz8 had significantly thinner highs, leaner mids, and about the same lows. Both pups sounded fine but I think the C8 is a more unique beast and has more versatility.

Re: Jazz bridge with alnico 8 magnet

Metal? Well in the bridge honestly I think it will sound too thin. I thought a Jazz was thin in the neck and I prefer single coil tones. So that shows what I think. I think fat single coils are less thin in the neck than the Jazz. I "assume" in the bridge it would be thin as well. Honestly I think an A2 would work better. It wouldn't do justice in terms of output but it would add warm mids, and round off the highs a bit. Only issue would be the bottom end most likely. I think the wind might keep it from being loose but I wouldn't actually know.

Re: Jazz bridge with alnico 8 magnet

The Jazz Bridge is a very underrated pickup, and it sounds good as the Jazz w/A5, and I think it's the same wind as the A2 APH. So I could only imagine that a good wind to start with would be fine with A8. Ballsy, but clear and natural sounding.

Re: Jazz bridge with alnico 8 magnet

isn't the jazz 43AWG and relatively under-wound?

No, it's AWG 42, SPN or PE, I don't remember exactly... when I've rewound a couple of those back in time, the hard drive where I've kept my notes fried...

Well, you nailed it right on the head.

Another thing: if the Jazz set has an excellent tone in the both-on position, when you change the magnets to an A4 for the neck and the A8 for the bridge, that tone changes from excellento to "to die for".

The same with the C8/'59nA4; these are my personal favorites.

I always run across your posts on other forums, so I know that you're a guy who lives for pickup formulas, and I respect you greatly for that.

I don't think you've ever said a single thing that I don't agree 100% with, so when you say something like Custom 8/59 A4 neck, it only makes me think that you're probably onto something that SD should be fully aware of.

It'd be awesome if SD made a Forum pickup set of Custom 8/59 A4 as a limited edition set for the price of regular pickups. Call it the Custom Shop Kojak set!!!

no sh1t?!

well, that's very interesting; i don't suppose you've re-wound an a2p and can comment on similarities between the jazz and a2p, re the wire and the winds themselves..?

Kojak's totally right. i've got an a4 PGb in the neck and an a5/a8 phat cat in the bridge of my mockingbird, and despite the difference in pickups, the magnet combo is great.

Well, thank you for your kind words, Joe!

No, I haven't, and I don't think I'd be able to tell the difference without doing an A/B comparison measuring both wires and tpl (turns-per-layer), and at the moment I don't even have the means to do it.

Sorry!
