iam trying to reach a clean sound clean enought for jazz on a very tight budget. i took a godin LG 90 and iam taking out the duncan sp3 90s and i order the duncan sp 90 1s vintage. also does anyone know about this amp i have the chance to purchase a Tech 21 Trademark 60 212 amp which is a 80 watt amp. could this be a good rig for what i want. i have a fender twin. but want something i can gig with and dont have to worry about tubes, thanks again

They are very nice. However, the Tech 21 is also very nice, and will be a bit more portable.

For Roland JAzz/Chorus in a prtable package - with bonus features, try a Cube 60. Are you gigging with this? Or just playing? Or what?

For a real Jazz tone, I would recommend a Polytone Mini brute. They are great little amps for a nice clean warm tone.

I prefer the Polytone, but others do like the Jazz amps as well. I guess its a matter of what type of sound you are after.

But in all honesty when I think of Jazz tone I hear Wes Montgomery in my head. Wes played a Gibson L5 through a Fender Princeton. I even read that he switched to a 15" speaker in the Fender. A nice Paf through a Fender tube amp...... It doesn't get much better than that!

Polytones are cool although I'm not too big of a fan. George Benson uses on in conjunction with a Fender Deville to get his tones, which is a cool idea. Grant Green used Tweed Twins back in the day and Wes used blackface Fenders like the Super Reverb and the Princeton Reverb. I can get a nice jazz tone with my ES with the tone rolled down and running into both amps. I like tubes the best, even for jazz. At band rehearsals, I use a silverface '71 Twin Reverb that is very nice too.

I'm curious how the Fender Jazzmaster Ultralight sounds and how it compares to Polytones. Be sure to check one of them out. Plus Evans amps are often grouped with Polytones.

polytones were used because they were loud and light, not because they sound good. i'd go with the Tech21 for great, light clean sounds. I use the TM60 1x12, since it is plenty lud enough. If you need it louder, plug an XLR cable into it for the PA- it sounds great.

Actually Wes Montgomery played through a Super Reverb until later when he switched over to a Standel Super Custom XV. Here, in this clip you can watch and you'll see the Super Reverb tilted back on it's legs on the stand behind him.

He toured with Linoel Hampton from 1948 to 1950, then returned to Indiana to support his family working as a machinist & playing with his brothers at night. he was not signed with Riverside until the late 50's, so much of his early career was done with probably a woody or tweed Princeton. The Super Reverb didn't come until the end of his career. The Suoer was not released until 1963.

Roland Jazz chorus 120 and 80 are the traditional choice amps for Jazz guitarists.
Personally I like clean amps but there's something too synthethic about the sound of most post 1980 SS amps including the above legendary Roland Jazz amps.
The only current production SS clean amp I've heard that I could live with is an Orange Crush 30R. Very warm and smooth amp but obviously not powerful enough for gigging.
Tubes still rule, even for clean.

Thanks for the clarification. I only know from those old videos I've found and the little bit I've read. I play all my jazz with my Super Reverb. I almost went with a twin or a solid state until I saw those videos of Wes and so I decided to just stick with my Super. It does a great job, even if it is a back breaker

You can get a 400W Clarus head by Acoustic Image for around $800 which is about what a JAZZ Chorus would run you. The down side is you'll need a cab, but if you can get better tone then it's worth it.
