Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

I never really took picks that seriously. I knew what I liked which was a tortex or the ultex but never really thought too much about it. Randomly I was watching a Petrucci interview on YouTube and he was going on about how important his Jazz III was and I'm not even really a Petrucci fan but remembered my friend who is always trying out new picks gave me a few ages ago. I have this pick tub that just has loads of different types that I've accumulated over the years and found a carbon, a Petrucci and my absolute favourite a yellow ultex Jazz III. It's like a total wake up call. Now a standard sized tortex feels like I'm playing with a 50p piece!!!!!!

I feel you. I recently tried a Gravity pick and it was crazy good.
Too bad they're so expensive.

I switch between Jazz I (blunt,) Jazz III (Ultex) & Jazz III ("carbon fiber.") Using a regular pick feels like playing a different instrument; which somewhat worries me.

Re: Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

I used the III for a while and it really sharpens (no pun) up your picking. I now really like the Ultex sharps

That appears to be a Charvel in your photo.

Man I just love that guitar!

cf max-grip jazz3 has really been a blessing for me,,,,I've been a jazz3 guy for the last 11yrs.
There was a Guitar Player issue back around 06 or 07 with JP on the cover saying something like "this pick will make you a better player".

Thanks man. She's been with me for 10 years and was 1 of the original Music Zoo specials. She's a bit beat up but plays really nice and has been all round Europe with me. I love just swapping pickups in her and working with her natural characteristics. For mahogany she has a lot of 'snap' because of the maple board. Great guitar.

As far as Petrucci saying Jazz III's make you a better player. I can totally agree and I never thought a pick would do that. I assumed it was a preference thing more than performance.

I have one of those TMZ naturals from '05 I think. Somewhere in storage.

My new favorites are the Dunlop max grips.

I had a similar experience - ultimately I went with the Jazz III XLs, as I need to strum chords as well as pick leads - the regular Jazz size was just too small for that.

Re: Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

I get the custom Jazz III shape made of Delrin from intunegp.com. I don't like the original plastic or textured versions, though. I usually use about 1.2mm thickness.

Re: Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

After I used the III long enough, you still hold the larger pick the same way. I use the full size sharps for the point and they don't feel so small for strumming.

I'd like to try the Ultex version. I haven't seen them at any shops, though, so I will order some online.

Dude, I use 1.0's playing bass. 0.60 for guitar.

Re: Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

I used Jazz III picks for a really long time. Now, I'm back to standard sized .88mm Tortex. Playing mandolin and flatpicking acoustic made me loosen up my pick grip, and that doesn't work with the Jazz III.

Did you try the max-grip jazz3?
Probably my favorite thing about them is that the combination of thickness and a knurled surface allow me to totally relax my grip.

Thin picks do have the give/bend that also helps with relaxation of the grip. You can hold them looser because they don't get "caught-up" when strumming.

Re: Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

I love the way the Jazz III plays but I hate the way it sounds. The way it chirps against the strings gets on my nerves.

Re: Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

Eric Johnson Jazz iii is what I use. Just a tad finer tip than the original. I tried the ultex and tortex ones, jp pick, gravity pick version, 2.0mm ultex - and the EJ just plays and sounds the best to me. It's warmer than the ultex
