Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

Re: Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

Did you try the max-grip jazz3?
Probably my favorite thing about them is that the combination of thickness and a knurled surface allow me to totally relax my grip.

Thin picks do have the give/bend that also helps with relaxation of the grip. You can hold them looser because they don't get "caught-up" when strumming.

Yes, I have some of those. On acoustic & mandolin, I use a pick made by BlueChip. It's 1.5mm and shaped like a Fender 346 (three point triangle). They're highly polished and sit in place better than any other pick I've ever used, WAY better than anybody's textured grip picks. I can hold it so loose and relaxed that I'd drop anything else gripped that loosely.

I use almost anything but these are my favourites

I can’t pick just one but primetones are probably it.
Further research is needed...

Re: Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

I really choke up on my pick, so I find the Jazz III too small. I use the Ultex Sharp and Hetfield Black Fang picks exclusively.

Re: Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

I get the custom Jazz III shape made of Delrin from intunegp.com. I don't like the original plastic or textured versions, though. I usually use about 1.2mm thickness.

I've been using Jazz III carbon fiber for a long time. My buddy showed me one of his intune's and I think I'm going to order some to check out. The little-to-no bevel made the attack a bit sharper and just had a slightly different feel. I believe his was 1.2 as well.

Well I think that's the point isn't it? To the audience or anybody else there isn't really any sound difference. It's all about the feel in your hands, the attack and how the strings react. It's not as if the singer in the band goes "Dude, that 75p guitar pick you've just bought sounds insane!"

This is an interesting video from Andertons

Re: Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

I've gone from Jazz III XL's to Tortex 1.14. I like the tone and fell of Tortex better, it's fuller and less sharp.

Re: Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

I attempted to use a non-Jazz III and had depressing results. Stepping away from them for the time being, to "regular" Fender Heavy.

Re: Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

I been using that Gravity Razer. I like the grip and man it slices right thru the strings with so little effort. Has a little scratchy attack tho, but I like that

Re: Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

It's been, I don't even remember how many years since I first read the rave reviews about the Jazz IIIs here in these forums and went out a bought a couple XLs, that I HATED with every fiber of my being. I couldn't find a way to hold them, the sharp edge would get caught under the string, they were a nightmare.

I threw them at some corner, never to be used again until many many years later when, after wearing out the last of my favorite Dunlop Tortex I picked it up as an in-between and... holy cow... everything just clicked! The shape felt like home, the once annoying edge allowed me a new level of control and the thickness, I had never used a thicker than .73 but this >1.0 thickness suddenly made sense, it was, for lack of a better word, a revelation.

They have now become an extension of my picking hand and I do not foresee that changing any time soon.

A fun fact is that, judging from the wear signs on them, it appears I must rotate them while playing, except I don't actually remember doing so, showing me how long it's been since I last actually *thought* about my picking hand...

The XL jazz IIIs are heaven for me, I use the reds, blacks, ultexs and primetones at the moment.
The 1.4 XL Primetone Jazz III is my favourite at the moment.

Re: Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

Have been using the Ultex Jazz iii's and slightly prefer the tone to the nylon Jazz iii's for playing fast passages. Nice clarity, not as warm as the nylon but not as bright as the Tortex.

However I bought a pack of Primetone Jazz iii's yesterday (which I think are also Ultex) with the hand beveled edge and the think I've found my perfect pick. The edges glide across the stings and when compared to the Jazz iii variety pack the Primetone and regular Ultex gave me my favorite tones. The Primetones edges are silky smooth compared to the regular nylon, Ultex or carbon fiber etc. They are a little more expensive but not a huge increase in cost for an upgraded playing experience.

Re: Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

I'd like to try the Ultex version. I haven't seen them at any shops, though, so I will order some online.

Mincer, what do you think of the Dunlop tortex? I'm only playing on 9s right now, and they have (I lost the paper) like .50 and 6 on the way to 1.0s-what would you advise for somebody doing chromatics the rest of their life?!?

I have a few Jazz IIIs. I like them, but they're a little small for my fat fingers.

I only use 9s. I used Tortex for years, then Gator Grips (both are made of delrin, which I think is brake pad material). I just switched shape maybe 5 years ago to the Jazz III shape, but still the delrin material.

Well, that takes care of everybody who says you'll never get anywhere w/9s. I bought some XL Jazz III Ultrex 1.4. I was thinking a stiff pick would help keep me vertical?

Re: Jazz III picks where have you been all my life!

Well, a thicker pick doesn't flex or have that 'snap' that thinner picks have 9that I hate). What keeps it more vertical is technique: lots of practice watching how the pick hits the string.

Well, maybe the pick will train my fingers. Or eyes. Or brain. Or guitar. I'll keep an eye on it.
