In a basswood guitar , 25.5 scale , rosewood .
I own the Jazz/Demon combo in one and i might want to try Full shred set in an other of the same model .
Thanks for your information about anything ; clarity , ouput , EQ , clean and dirty , wire guage ...

Re: Jazz neck/Demon vs Full shred set ?

i have both so i can give you tons of input.

jazz/demon - basswood music man john petrucci - guitar sounds amazing with clean, quite clear and articulate. Distortions also sounds good with a bluesy vibe from the jazz and a nice midrange distortion from the demon. The demon seems to do great no matter how much distortion you throw at it but keeps its initial character (heavy heavy metal irionicaly doesnt sound that great with this pup)
full shred set - ibanez mahogany 's' type - this guitar has a really thick tone to it so the full shreds compliment it well. The pups do clean well but are amazing when it comes to distortion. Both pups seem to have their own 'voice' and i've found it a little tough to get a classic vibe from the neck .
comparison - the full shred can be a bit harsh sounding compared to the jazz/ demon. If the guitar is dark sounding ( i know its basswood but some guitars of the same wood sound darker then others) this shouldn't be a problem. When i practice by myself i seem to prefer the jazz/demon but with a full band, the unique sound of the neck pickup + the ability to cut through the mix really helps.

So you would say that In bridge Full shred is more treebly ( with enough mids ?) than Demon ?
And about clarity and ouput ?

After listening carrefully to the samples , it is obvious thta the Full Shred is darker than the Demon , with less overtones , less richness , but maybe more focused , more like a Dimarzio .

my fullshred (bridge) is much brighter than the demon with more output. Both pups seem to have about the same amount of clarity.

jazz in the neck is much better for clean tones or classic 70's rock-ish tones. the full shred has more of a compressed tone.

.
Have you tried both ? because it is not what i hear from the samples ?
( I hear the opposite )

i own both pickups for the neck.

the FS & Jazz have good receptions to drive. if you are into high gain settings & in need of clarity across the fretboard, the FS would serve you well. the Jazz on the other hand, handles high gain well AND it has superb cleans.

That's why i chose the jazz over the full shred for the neck.

Played both, own one, the better one: Full Shred (neck)
More pick attack than any pup I've ever played & clearer more dynamic tone
than the Jazz IMO. Disagree about the FS soundind compressed actually quite the opposite, Very big & full. The FS pups are one of the most underrated pups in the Duncan line. Good for me, since I use them. The Jazz would be my 2nd choice.

How about for cleans?? Which of the two is more chimey??

Re: Jazz neck/Demon vs Full shred set ?

I agree with you there frehley.. I chose the FS over the Jazz because of its pick attack and clarity. I think it is much more chimey and articulate than the Jazz when i tried it. The FS and the Jazz are the only two duncans i have tried in the neck, and thankfully i found the one i like the most after the second try. Under high gain i cant find the tone i am really looking for, but im not sure its the pickups fault. I mostly just use it clean, and it meets those needs 100%.

i own both.

edit: the demon is mounted directly to the guitar so this might be why it has a fatter sound.

IMO, the FS bridge is a bit more trebly than the Demon but, not nearly as harsh sounding to my ears. I really like the FS but, I cant deal with the demon what so ever!

The Jazz neck seems to have alot more life to it than the FS neck. I find the FS neck to be sterile.

Re: Jazz neck/Demon vs Full shred set ?

Thanks Theody , i'll stick to the Demon then if the Shred is so bright .
Have you tried a Demon with alnico8 ?

Re: Jazz neck/Demon vs Full shred set ?

Not quite bro, to my ears the FS has a bit more treble but, the Demon has ALOT more percived brightness! That was part of the HARSHNESS I descibed. Its WAY harsh to my ears!
