how would the pearly gates neck improve my sound from a a2pro?
the a2pro i found to be too spongy and too much of a blues tone, wanted more rockk n roll tone(as in a little more focus and bite).
could the pearly remedy this?or should i move to the seth?

Actually, you just described the difference between the PGn and the APHn. The Seth I found was a bit more up fron thtan the APH, but was still very creamy and round. Not a biad pickup at all (in fact, one of my fave neck pickups), but in a for rock in a LP, I'll stick with the PGn. If I were more of a jazz cat, I'd definately be sticking with the Seth.

For articulation I always think of the Alnico 2 Pro and the Jazz, which are essentially the same pup with different mags. The jazz could be too bright for some folks, but I like it quite a bit. The A2P is warmer, with more mids and bass.

The pup that came in the HSS Fender you were talking about was not a Pearly Gates, but a Pearly Gates PLUS. The difference is that the Plus has an Alnico 5 magnet instead of Alnico 2.

Actually, the mids on the PGn make it a bit more aggressive and cutting than the APH. It's not as smooth and creamy, though if you manipulate the tone controls, you can get it to be smooth.

I have the C5/PGn combo in my LP right now and love it. If you play loud through a nice tube amp (or, in my case, tube power amp and digital pre), it's a tough combo to beat for hard rock.

Hhhmmm... since I already have the APH1 on my other LP, I guess I should try a different pup... so... you think C5/PGn would be better than a C5/59 combo?

Thanks!

the Jazz is popular, but what sounds 'articulate' is just plain 'too bright' for a neck pickup for me, much less any style of jazz.

Well what sounds fine to some people ('59N) is just too bassy and boomy for me....I tend to like neck pickups that are too bright for some people...I'm going to order a Jazz I think.

Nice PG description Benjy! One of the things I really like about it is that it's very much a "classic" PAF but with just a little "more" A slight tweek of the volume or tone can work it back down in terms of toe or volume to a very nice regular PAF place.
