Jazz on an 8 string

I'm almost done repairing a brand new Schecter 8 string that was subjected to the tender mercies of UPS during shipping and the peghead was broken off. One of my jazz pals is interested in getting it once I'm finished with it, but he wants to play jazz on it - not djent. He is thinking having one string lower and one string higher with the middle 6 strings in standard tuning. Anyone experimented with this, or heard of someone who has? Also - you have suggestions on string brands and gauges? I'm thinking a light top / heavy bottom set will be fine, something like .008 to .068.... I don't think anyone makes a set like that.... Discuss, please.

Re: Jazz on an 8 string

Sounds awesome. Will have good bass for walking bass lines and stuff. Why not make a custom set for a special guitar like that? Normal gauges suck.

E 0.0105 in. 17.89 lbs
B 0.0140 in. 17.85 lbs
G 0.0180 in. 18.58 lb
D 0.0260 in. 18.31 lbs
A 0.0370 in. 20.14 lbs
E 0.0500 in. 19.58 lbs
B 0.0680 in. 20.66 lbs

Or, 2 strings lower, for bass lines. That would seem to make more sense.

Well, walking bass lines. It is all in the swing. Check out Charlie Hunter.

He sounds like he's playing the organ at a baseball game.

My college buddies and I would call them "mod cats". Players generally with skill and rhythmic complexity but 0 musical melody to follow.

Are you people nuts? Listen to some of Hunters’ recordings. He’s an amazing player and very musical.
I’m not crazy about the fast Leslie tone he was using, but that’s not an uncommon thing. Listen to Danny Gatton.

No thanks... I've heard enough! I think I'll stick with listening to music instead from now on.

TBH, I'm not a jazz fan. I "get" what they are doing and I can absolutely hear the genius in the playing but the music as a genre does nothing for me. It all sounds the same. Lots of technical noodling with little melody/substance.
Im a fan of shred type players but I feel similarly about guys like Yngwie....amazing skill and complex sequences but his songs just don't have any substance to me.
Doesn't mean that I don't think he's an amazing player.

Re: Jazz on an 8 string

Jazz is some of the most melodic music ever made. The fact that there is bad music in that genre (and in every genre) doesn't mean everyone is noodling.

Do you people not realize he’s playing bass and guitar at the same time?

Try it and come back and tell me he sucks. lol.

None of the examples shown are doing that.

Or keep listening to bland music.
