jazz or seth in a LP neck

i bin looking for that old gibson les paul custom sound neck pickup clean a long time now.
ended up trying the 59 which was great(but lacked mids)
which led me to the A2pro,
that came out being great distorted but very dark clean.

i wanna brighter sound, now i know its probably best for me to look for a jazz(as its brighter) but if im looking for the old PAF sound woudnt it be best to skip the jazz and go for the sethlover instead?
will it give me a more open brighter sound as oposed to the A2pro?
it will be going in a mahogany LP custom clone guitar.

Re: jazz or seth in a LP neck

I've never tried it, but a lot of guys *love* the Pearly Gates in the neck. It is still a PAF type, and I get the impression that it is a *little* brighter than the other a2 PAF types.

Seth Lover or '59.

you're correct - the Seth is smooth with its A2 mags, but it also has presence, I think due in part to the non potting.

Re: jazz or seth in a LP neck

I'd say go for the Seth and crank up the pole pieces, this will emphasize the screw coil more and give it a brighter, slightly more single-coil-ish tone. If that doesn't work, then go for the Jazz.

The PGN had this horrible tube screamer like mid peak that I Hated and the "sizzle" I didn't care for either.....Alot of guys love the PGN though?

I'm going to try a Jazz N stock and see how it is? The 59N is bass heavy in alot of neck positions, but the eq is nice!

Haven't tryed the Seth because it's always a bit pricey compared to other stuff I can get cheaper..

Re: jazz or seth in a LP neck

I WOULD SAY go for the SETH

BUT

it sounds like you really want articulation, and the Jazz will give you that. I know it is listed as a "modern" bucker, however, IMHO it is a sweeter, richer, more articulate, less fat 59. So if you liked the 59, I'd say the jazz would give you the improvements.

Re: jazz or seth in a LP neck

Olin ,
do you have any experiences with the gibson 57 on the neck(thought i read someting you wrote bout that)?
would that be good for jazz while retaining a good paf sound like the seth?

ZHANG did you ever sell that SETH? I forgot to buy it from you.

I actually sent it off to Jon Moore a couple of months ago for a rewind before I had the "brilliant" idea of winding my own on my drill. The Seth was a very good pickup but I didn't have any use for it at the time (hence wanting to sell it).

He's re-winding it to 9.5k for me with a bright slug coil/sweet screw coil for an overwound PAF tone that bites but with a sweet top.

If I decide I don't want it, I'd be willing to sell it to you. On the other hand, I've also got some humbucker parts coming in so if you want a good and really cheap humbucker, I can make you one to spec.

I know you can get other stuff cheaper, but the Seth is a *must try* in my book. I've never had one in the neck though, and I think that is where a lot of players prefer the Seth.

FWIW, I *love* the Jazz neck. It does get a bit of that '59ish vibe to it. It is a touch more modern sounding with a lot of clarity. When someone says PAF though, I automatically think that they want something a tad more traditional sounding than the Jazz.

Madguitar, maybe it would be worth it to try one of the Jazz/59 hybrids? You could always throw an a2 magnet in there if you want more of the a2 vibe. Maybe Stratdeluxer could help you a little with that choice.

I'm very familiar with the 59N and the 59B.....I never tryed a Jazz N but I have 1 on it's way from a trade with Push To Shuv....Could you tell me please, the overall differences in the eq between the Jazz N and the 59N,especially as far as the lows are concerned! Does it woof in the lows like the A5 59N?

I do have a Jazz/59N A4 Hybrid in the neck of my Love Rock Tokai, and man that's a great pickup! I'm sure I'll just build another Jazz/59 Hybrid and that'll be that.

Re: jazz or seth in a LP neck

To me, the Seth is just as dark as the APH, so I'd go for the Jazz N first.

Jolly tried a Jazz Bridge in the neck position once, and swears it's even better.
I could imagine that a Jazz B in the neck, along with a a hotter bridge humbucker would work pretty well......like a C-5/Jazz B or Custom/Jazz B
