jazz scales

Re: jazz scales

What are some basic Jazz scales that I should learn to improvise with?
the dorian mode: R 2 b3 4 5 6 b7

the blues scale: R b3 4 b5 5 b7

the aeolian mode: R 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7

the harmonic minor: R 2 b3 4 5 b6 7
there are to many to list here...

check out a book called "Scales and Modes" by Vincent Bredice on Mel Bay publications.

Re: jazz scales

Add chromatic notes to every scale you play.
Use octaves when in doubt - Wes used them on simple scales without thinking too much about it. It sounds jazzy from the first second.
you can look at the bebop scale as a mixolydian combined with the major scale... so they both work. Use dorian when you play minor melodies.
Scofield uses the Ionian scale in many tunes if you're going for his type of jazz playing.
