Jazzmaster Sound

I'm thinking of getting a epiphone gold top ( with the p90's) but unsure about the tone. As you can see, i'm wanting the Jazzmaster sound, with out paying an arm and a leg. Any ideas? Dangley Suggested the Jagmaster, but, Squire's scare me!

heh, get a Japanese made, Vista Jagmaster! Squires are underrated IMO. I've already said my take on epiphones in a few posts today (basically I don't like them and they're overpriced ;)

P90s really don't sound like Jazz pickups though... not in the least to me. And even though they look similar, they're bigger and you would need to route bigger holes for them if you wanted to retrofit... and since it's mahogany and a number of other things, it still wouldn't sound like a Jazz.

If you went the went the route of the Jagmaster, you'd still have to route but you'd be closer.

My suggestion- for around the price of a goldtop LP from Epiphone (maybe a bit more), you can probably find a 90s reissue Japanese made Jazzmaster (a real fender), and you'll get that tone ;) japanese made fenders (and squiers) are great guitars.

Most modern guitars are going with p90's rather than fender soapbars. The p90's are just far more versatile. I was looking around ebay last night and you could get some brand new retro jaguarish guitars with p90's for under $250.

Last year, one of my favorite hang-out/pawn shops had one of those on the wall. I messed with it a bit. I loved it, but it was just a little out of my range at that time. If I see another, I'm gonna snag it. Cool guitar.

Jay turser Surfcaster?

Jay Tursers are decent in my experience. Nothing too horrible... considering plywood body and the usual el cheapo stuff. expect to change all the hardware.

Actually I was talking about the Ibanez Tallman which I own. Or SX has a model with three p90's. The one from SX has an alder body and decent looking hardware. The only thing I have replaced on my Tallman is the bridge p90 with a Fralin Blues 90. Although I am not wild about the vintage style tuners.
