Jazzmaster Wiring issue

Hey everyone,

I recently decided to redo all the wiring and replace the electronics on my jazzmaster which turned out to be a huge mistake. At first I only had an issue with the lead circuit and the rhythm circuit was fine. I checked to make sure that all the connections were right according to the diagram and made sure no two wires were touching and could cause a short. Ive redone all the wiring at least three times which didnt help at all. Last night when I redid the wiring however, the rhythm circuit decided not to work either and now nothing works at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions or tips that could help me solve this problem? I have no idea what else to do.

Re: Jazzmaster Wiring issue

Welcome to the forum.

Beginning at the output jack socket, you appear to have the connections the wrong way about.

On the tone pot, the capacitor should be soldered to the centre lug, not the outside one that carries the signal.

On the selector switch, you have paired the leaf contacts wrongly AND used the switch chassis ground lug as the output.

The volume pot is too smothered in solder for me to bother trying to make sense of it.

Similarly, the use of black wires for all of the rhythm circuit switch makes it virtually impossible to trace what you have connected to where.

Here is the SD JM schematic. http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=jazzmaster

Re: Jazzmaster Wiring issue

Thanks for the reply. The output jack problem fixed the rhythm circuit so thats on problem done. I dont know what you mean by the leaf contacts and which lug did I use as the output? As far as the volume pot, I cleaned it up a bit and removed the solder. most of the mess on it was the ground contacts.

Click on the hyperlink in post #2.

Observe how the two innermost contacts on the selector switch are bent together and soldered to carry the signal to the volume pot. Compare the arrangement in the schematic diagram with what you have done.

NOTE: I am about to set off on a five hour car journey. I shall not be available to answer any further questions until approximately 0700EST.
