JB/59b hybrid: looking for more. Help please!

Hi there!

First time posting here.
I have made two hybrids and whike I am happy with the result I am totally sure I could be happier and closer to perfection... you know: "perfection"

Right know in the neck I am using a DDn/59n with A5 hybrid (actually the 59 is a duncan designed HB101N). It sounds good, quite good. Nice balance, single coil-ish highs up the fretboard nice definition and very fluid like. Could use a bit more highs/clarity. I don't want to use a ceramic magnet for clarity so... maybe a Jazz/DDn would work better? Kind of afraid with the Jazz I will get less mid frequencies... don't want that. I want it meaty!

In the bridge I am using a JB/59b (well Duncan Designed HB102B and HB101B). Love it. Absolutely love it. I really recommend it to everyone. Thick, clear, powerfull... BUT maybe a bit thicker will be better? Hoe aboit using two A5 magnets as if it was a hughe A5 magnet? Don't know if it will make it thicker or just louder...

What do you think? Maybe a JB/Custom A5? In that case I will have to buy a Custom... Invader/JB? Invader/DDn? Invader/Jazz?

Thinking of the Invader as for thicker... but I insist: don't want ceramic so maybe an A5 Invader could be nice...

I am just starting in this hybrids world and don't have money to try out wverything that comes to my mind...

Will appreciate any help.

How about just changing the magnets? Try an A4 in the neck and either an A8 or a regular ceramic in the bridge.

I've tried the JB/C A5 and like it. not sure if that's of any good to you, as I've also tried the JB/59 and didn't care for it. lol!

Because of darthphineas I'm buying an Invader... since I tried that pup in a guitarshop few years ago I have always thought I could use it one day and... today is the day. Probably a Hybrid with the DDn... to start!

Gonna buy a few magnets also... Do I have to understand that the A4 magnet is more middy and bright than the A5? Trying an A8 could be interesting... absolutely sure not gonna get more ceramics: I don't want that kind of top end. For sure.

Hahahahahahaha. Well, maybe I just took attention to the part of the post where you said you liked the JB/C but not the JB/59.

You know, priorities :P

I recently did a HB102/ HB103 hybrid with A8 mags. Turned out pretty solid. A8s are definitely worth considering, though they add more bite than beef. But still worth trying. Interesting though on stacking mags, I wonder if that works.

I noticed the screw coil seems to dominate. So in my "djenting" guitars, I used the HB103 screw coil,102 for the slug coil. In my rock guitars I used the opposite, HB102 screw coil, 103 slug coil.

Aren't HB102 and HB103 the extact same coils except for the magnet? A5 for 102 and Ceramic for 103.

Maybe there are some differences in yhe Duncan Designed line because in the "real deal SD" they are suposed to be the same winding specs (JB vs Distortion).

Do they soubd different? The two hybrids you made.

They are most definitely different coils. 102 had a full voice and that classic midrange spike, great for full sounding chords. The 103 was more sterile and stiff sounding with a tighter low end, better for metal and djent.

I did some mag swapping (A5, A5uo, A8, ceramic) on both models before before making the hybrid, and each pickup kept its unique characteristics throughout.

Yes, the hybrids sound different. I got much closer to the sound I was looking for.

I understand that it's generally better to combine two pickups that are more diverse (especially in output) but my little experiment worked well enough for me.
