JB and PAF Pro?

I've got a mahogany bodied guitar and was wondering how a JB in the bridge and PAF Pro in the neck would sound in it. Anyone know? Also wondering if a JB and PAF Pro would sound good together?

Re: JB and PAF Pro?

Well a JB and a 59' are a popular combo and the 59' is a PAF style pup. So I don't see why not.

Re: JB and PAF Pro?

First off - IMO a PAF pro is no '59, different beast. I have a 59 set in a mahogany setneck, while JB + Ppro is the combo I have in my SG right now, works OK, not great. PPro sounds huge -its lows are pretty deep (lower in the spectrum). Through a Fender, it shakes the house. tightens up a bit through a higain preamp (they dump a lot of bass) but it does not match up well to the JB which is really tight - JB does not have the deep lows of the PPro, nor the highs.

The 59 is actually a better fit for the JB, its lows are higher up & it has some midrange punch in the neck pos, like the JB. '59 really resonates on the G &B strings.

Jazz is good too - a cleaner sound than the 59, fairly balanced overall and more punch there on the wound strings than the 59. That's the classic match with a JB but I think a 59 might be better.

I would think the PAF Joe would make a better neck pup than the PAF pro but I have not used one yet.

TONE ZONE!!!

Which is what I'm doing. Or a PATB1 or PATB2 if ya wanna go Duncan - never used either but they look big & fat.

The FRED is also good if you want more dynamics and more harmonics. Also a popular match with the PAF Pro. (Joe Satriani respectively)

Re: JB and PAF Pro?

I actually don't like a PAF Pro in the neck of a mahogany-bodied guitar. The lows fart out and get woofy IMO, that pickup really shines in something like alder or basswood, as the low end is somewhat tubular and hollow sounding from that pickup. Listen to Satriani's "House Full of Bullets" to hear a good example of the PAF Pro at work.
