Hi guys.
So, I have a fairly straightforward problem- one of the mounting legs on my SH-4 JB is bent.
I would like to know how i can fix this.
Many thanks in advance.

Re: JB bent mounting leg HELP!!!

Welcome to the forum!

I've had that issue, and one time I bent it right back. Another time it snapped off, so I am 1 for 2. Gently bend it. Worst case is that if it snaps off, you need another baseplate. That isn't an impossible fix.

Re: JB bent mounting leg HELP!!!

Thanks very much for the replies. I'll try to bend it back to a 90 degree angle. I'm little scarred, as this is my first SD pickup, and I don't want to screw it up.

Re: JB bent mounting leg HELP!!!

First hold it over a fire to soften the metal,,,,,bend,,,then quench it in cold beer so this won't happen again.

I think I've had enough F.I.F. for the day,,,,and probably enough beers also.

Re: JB bent mounting leg HELP!!!

This is not odd at all. The pickup just got impacted somehow. Bend it to fix it. Two seconds – done. Returning it over this would be retarded.

It wouldn`t be as you put it retarded . The guy was sold a pickup with a bent mounting leg and I bet the seller didn't`t inform him ahead of time . He's got every right to a refund .

Re: JB bent mounting leg HELP!!!

Probably will bend back gently without snapping off.
Heating up the pivot-point of the bend with an iron might indeed lesson the chance of snapping at the crease. (?)

Re: JB bent mounting leg HELP!!!

Well. I hope you didn't mind me asking (the OP). Reason I asked is because I too am new to mucking about with replacing pickups etc. and want to know what to avoid. Just replaced a stock Jackson bridge pickup with a Dimarzio Super Distortion (don't like but long story) and on both: that brass plate and the mounting legs seemed pretty darn solid to me i.e. seemed to me it would take some force to bend out of shape??? Beyond what a pickup mounting screw could do if the pickup was somehow caught in the cavity and the adjustment forced??? Dunno. Maybe it's been dropped or had something dropped on top of it??? You sure this pickup actually works (before you go bending away)???

P.S.

Thought I'd better take another look so just looked at the stock Jackson pickup that I took out. No way that can be bent by hand (not on this pickup anyway) i.e. would probably need a vice to bend. Dunno about SD pickups though (not yet anyway i.e. my time is coming soon). Guess all I'm saying is that if your pickup is anything like these stock Jackson pickups then that's the result of a fair amount of force being applied one way or the other.

UPDATE:
Hi guys.
So, I bent the pickup back to place, and to my surprise- it didn't snap. I soldered everything and now I'm a proud owner of a working SH-4 JB :) Everything is alright with the pickup, and I just love the sound. My guitar SCREAMS now...
Thanks for all the help.
