JB in my LP Traditional

I installed a JB in my Les Paul Traditional yesterday. I think it sounds better than the 57+ that came stock in it, but it is hot. I have a few extra magnets (UOA5 and an A4). How do you think they'd sound? I was also considering trying the A5 in the 59 I have in the neck.

The 59 already has an A5. I like an A4 when I have a 59n in a Les Paul (its a fairly common mod here) and the UOA5 or an A2 will sound nice in the JB.

Re: JB in my LP Traditional

What difference will I notice in the JB with the UOA5 vs the A5?

Re: JB in my LP Traditional

The unoriented will have a drop in output and add some squish. The peaky upper mids will be tamed somewhat.

Re: JB in my LP Traditional

Perhaps. I'd temper my expectations. It's still compressed and pretty hot even with an A2.

Re: JB in my LP Traditional

I know it will be hot no matter what at 17K or so.

That's not completely true. There are magic ways you can restore vintage character to a hot pickup, such as grounding a resistor between the two coils. Also DCR doesn't equate to heat or output. There are other factors such as the wire type and gauge, the magnet, and the particular wind on the pickup. A scatterwound 42 gauge plain enamel humbuckers wound to 7.6k will sound nothing like a non-scatterwound 44 guage polyurethane insulated humbuckers wound to 7.6k.

The Custom Shop SLUG and Zephyr set are excellent examples if you get the chance to research them.

Re: JB in my LP Traditional

An A2 still sounds and responds like a hot pickup. I tried this in my JB, but it didn't do enough for me. I just had to realize that while the JB is great when others use it, it doesn't work for me, no matter what magnet I've tried.

Re: JB in my LP Traditional

UOA5 = slightly less picky etc (same hot)
A5 - Stock
A2 - way less high end (a little less hot, but not much)
A8 - rounder highs, tighter bass, mids down a bit (a little hotter maybe)

Its a hot pup....hot is as hot does. I dig the A8 - sounds kinda like halfway between a Duncan and a DiMarzio Distortion/SuperDistortion to me. Not as thick as DM, but not as Screamer as the Duncan.

A lot of guys dig the A2. I thin k of it as an A2P with a bad attitude. (<= horrible analogy, but I didn't keep an A2 in there more than afternoon)

Re: JB in my LP Traditional

I want to do a few JB mag mods, but dont want to use either of the 80s vintage JB's i have in my parts bin. I need to pick up a few more modern JB's and do a RCA8 JB and a standard Ceramic thickness JB.

Re: JB in my LP Traditional

The A2JB sounds killer in a Les Paul Rocked that setup for quite a while.

Re: JB in my LP Traditional

A4 sounds great to me in my JB. It smooths it out perfectly and is really balanced. Nicely detailed in all parts of the eq and is slightly subdued compared to A5.

Also I have UOA5 in my 59 and it sounds great.
