JB in Neck of SG Standard ?

How do you guys think the JB would sound in an SG Standard ? I know some people say it will sound muddy, but i'm kind of looking for a very distorted sound at the neck, with Mild Treble/Mids, and decent Bass... would this work good ? Thanks

PS - Can anyone tell me how close a covered SH-5 Custom should be to the strings, in the bridge position of an SG Standard (without mounting rings) ? The pickups tilt up because of not having mounting rings, so te height measuring is kind of frustrating... any help ? I put the screw pole pieces just slightly above being flush with the bobbin, and raised a few to adjust volume of each string...

Thanks for help.

A JB in the neck of that will be cool as long as the bridge pickup is as hot or hotter than the JB. Quite a few folks like a JB in the neck.

Thanks for your help. I'm going to give it a shot.

Can you help me w/ pickup height for the SH-5 ? What do you think it would sound best at ? (like I said, it tilts up)

I usually play in Eb tuning.

Only you can answer that.

Raise and lower till you like it. No other way.

Re: JB in Neck of SG Standard ?

I've got a JB in the neck of a guitar similar to an SG (mahogany body, mahogany neck) and love it. However, my tonal preferences and yours are not going to be identical, just as our playing styles won't.

As for the covered pickup's proximity to the strings, go with what sounds best for you.

Put a piece of foam from the pickup's box under the pickup to keep it level. You're robbing yourself of ideal tone by leaving it angled, as one coil is closer than the other, and the other is too far away to be of any benefit - you may as well replace it with a single coil.
