JB/Jazz in a PRS?

Has anyone ever tried the JB/Jazz combo in a PRS guitar? If so, what model, and what were your results?

Thanks!

Re: JB/Jazz in a PRS?

PRS guitars have strong upper mids, so adding a pickup with strong upper mids will result in .....mids. It'll sound good, but in my experience, the C-5, CC, and Custom sound better. I'd imagine that the Jazz neck will be great sounding in any PRS. I've got C-5/59 in both my McCarties, but one has a bridge that's wound slightly hotter, at 15.3K. It's one of the best sounding guitars I've heard, despite the fact it seems like it might be too hot. It actually sounds perfect.

Re: JB/Jazz in a PRS?

I have a JB/Jazz in a CE22. The JB is hard to beat for leads. The Jazz in my guitar is a little on the bright side for a neck pickup, but it is still a good sounding pickup. If I were to do anything to it I'd replace the Jazz with a 59 or PG and leave the JB in.

Re: JB/Jazz in a PRS?

Stratsky,
Are you running that combo with the stock 500k pots? If not, what do you have in there?

Gearjoneser,
Thanks a lot for the info! Do you think the JB/Jazz would be alright in a CU24? I know Stratsky said his Jazz in the neck is a little bright, which would mean it would be even brighter in a 24 fretter position, but I just wanted to get your thoughts. Hopefully this will be going through a Bogner Shiva soon.

I'm looking for something that can cover a lot of ground but be a lot sweeter and enjoyable compared to the HFS/VB combo. I would like to cover mainly 80's Hair Metal, Classic Rock, EVH, but also cleans and slightly pushed type of cleans. If this would'nt work out too well, what pickup combo's would you guys recommend. I was also thinking about getting the EVH/78 set.

Re: JB/Jazz in a PRS?

One thing that I think works well for a 24 fret guitar is to turn the neck pickup around, so the stud coil is closer to the neck. I think the stud coil picks up more signal than the screw coils, so it gets a slightly bas-ier tone that way. The stud coil is in approximately the same place as it would be on a 22 fret guitar.

I still have the original 500K pots in it. You hear alot about the JB being too bright with 500K pots, but this isn't the case with this guitar.

Re: JB/Jazz in a PRS?

I had the Jazz in my CU24, but I changed it out in favor of some more bass with the 59...that said, I had not yet pulled the treble bleed cap which helped the tone A LOT!

I personally prefer A2 mag pups myself, thus the reason I put an A2 mag in the 59, which decreased the bass some, but added a nice bit of mids texture and warmed up the high end.

Currently in my PRS I have a A2 59 in the neck, and a 78 in the bridge. The 78 just screams in that guitar, but high output A2 bridge pups sound nice too.

Re: JB/Jazz in a PRS?

I have a JB/59' set in my PRS CE-22 and the JB is a great pickup for PRS's. I've tried a Custom in the bridge and had great results with that as well. The JB just sings more to my ears. I tried a Jazz in the neck, but it was just too dry and not bouncy enough. The '59 solved that problem pretty quick. The '59 in the neck on my CE is just awsome, great clean, but also does very well when distorted.

Re: JB/Jazz in a PRS?

I really like the 59 neck in PRS's. I'm using a C-5 bridge, but I'd also like to try a Seth or CC, to see if I like them in my McCarty. Since PRS's have naturally tight lows, I think A2 pickups would sound fine.

I'm not positive, but I think Evan Skopp has a CC/PGn in his PRS.....the one you see in Duncan ads, and it's the same one pictured on the main Duncan site page.

How would you compare the JB to the C-5 in a PRS. I have a C-5 coming in the mail to try in my CE-22.

Can you describe what the 78 is like in your CU24 a little more? :)

Re: JB/Jazz in a PRS?

First the 78 is best described as chewy. It has a familiar feel under your fingers. The pup is pretty aggressive too. Lots of harmonics too. Honestly it is probably my favorite Duncan humbucker.

The low end is loose, not in a flubby way, but in a ragged kind of way.
