JB/Jazz with Alnicky 2's

Well, I switched mags in my JB/Jazz combo in my Custom 22. So far, I love it. Nice round sound. Clean is very sweet sounding. Dirty is nice and thick. It might could use a little more bottom, but I really need to get it out and play to see. Good thing I'm going out to play some more tomorrow night.

The V's were just too scooped sounding in the PRS, a bit glassy and buzzy to me.

Re: JB/Jazz with Alnicky 2's

Hi
I have an interest in this subject as I plan to replace the A5 in the JB at the bridge of the guitar you can see here in my avatar pic. There are a few mentions to this scattered around the forum, you have probably seen some of them. Most of what I've read sounds favourable, the A2 tames some of that high mid emphasis the JB is known for apparently. Please let us know how yours goes and how you feel about it, I'm sure there are others besides myself who will be keen to hear your thoughts. (I'd be keen to hear your sound actually, but you might need to turn up a bit....OK...a LOT....I'm in Australia..... :chairfall )

Hey crusty, i'm also in aus; where are you planning to get your magnets from?

And what gtr is that?

Re: JB/Jazz with Alnicky 2's

Hey I've seen that guitar before... one of those headless ones with the tuners at the bottom.
How are they?

BBQLS1, let us know how it goes. I'm curious too.

Hi guys,
larry emdur...thought that handle seemed distinctly Aussie...hehe! I wasn't able to find any suitable pickup size magnets here but I found these 2 in the US...I plan to buy from one or the other of them.

This second one, Guitar Jones USA seems to have their site under reconstruction at the moment but keep trying, there are magnets there. The first one, Wymore Guitars, has Alnico 2,3,5 and 8's for about US$4 each. I think one of these companies may not sell outside of the US but the other will, can't remember which way round though.

BBQLS1, maybe you could tell us where you're going to get your magnets from, or advise us of places we can try?

I'm sorry to railroad this thread for just a moment to answer these questions I've been asked, I don't know any other way or place to respond to them....

The guitar in the avatar pic is Linda guitar. I designed her and I helped a guitar maker friend to build her in 1994/5. The bridge and tuning mechanism came from a Washburn Bantam headless guitar, which I had played for several years before this guitar was built. The body is one piece of honduras mahogany and the neck is from the same piece. The fretboard is New Guinea ebony and the body cap is AAA maple, although it doesn't look real great in this particular photo. The pickups are a Gibson humbucker from the 80's at the neck and a Seymour JB in the bridge, the volume control has a push-pull for series/parallel on the JB. I am about to change the pickups and make the 59/Custom hybrid for the bridge and a 59 for the neck, maybe with an A2 or A3 magnet. I have played this guitar so much for the last 11 years and it is absolutely a part of me. I'm not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing to develop such a close bond with a guitar.

The JB in this guitar is the one I plan to fit with an A2 magnet, and hence looking forward heaps to hearing what BBLS1 thinks of his....
(well i feel bad for railroading the subject there and have tried to get things back on track....now i feel sucky!)....sorry.....

Re: JB/Jazz with Alnicky 2's

I've been using a JB with an Alnico 2 in the bridge for quite some time now. Really tames the highend sizzle of the JB a bit, best analogy I can think of is it sounds like a stoned JB... more relaxed and mellow. The Jazz with the Alnico 2 is essentially an Alnico 2 Pro IIRC. Thats the exact combo I've had in my Schecter for almost a year now and I love it.

Re: JB/Jazz with Alnicky 2's

I got the mags from Wymore Guitars.

You might need to use the search engine to find the mags.

The magnet definitely tames the sizzle. It's just sweeter sounding (less bite, not so harsh, less bright). It taps better than the custom custom, which is good since I have the 5 way rotary. It sounds way better to me than before. I think this guitar just doesn't like A5 mags.

Still, I'll know better when I get to crank it out tonight (hopefully).
