I think sometimes people expect too much from a pickup. I've been getting a nice crunch from a PAF for years by setting my amp correctly. I'm wondering if maybe there is a wiring issue with the JB that's causing the problem. Either that, or it's set too far from the strings. It's one of the highest output pickups on the market, so if it isn't powerful enough for you, there isn't too much else to move up to. Before giving up on the JB, I'd make sure it's wired and set up properly. I'd also recommend playing around with different amp settings, just to see if you can find a sweet spot.

The DD is a JB with an oversized ceramic mag. It's about twice the thickness of a standard ceramic magnet.
That said, I've tried both standard sized, oversized, and A5 (JB) in that pickup.
The DD wins, at least in mohogany
. It's mids can be annoying in Alder, but I also don't run a tone pot in that guitar. I'm getting a capacitor on Wednesday to try that out.

One other thing that might help your JB and your Les Paul have a little more highs: DO THE 50's MOD! It's very simple. All you do is unsolder your tone capacitor from the #1 terminal of the volume pots and resolder it to the middle terminal. Please try this! Thanks, Lew

I had Zakk Wyldes guitar tech Fred install the JB so I’m sure it hooked up ok. Don’t get me wrong I do like the JB but I can’t crunch like I want to and do pinch harmonics as easily as I would like. I think I’m going to try the Distortion since it’s a hotter JB
The problem is that you can’t “test drive” pickups. So its trial and error

the JB has plenty of power so it must be you have it too far from the strings
if that still does not do it for you then try the distortion pup

The JB just doesn’t have what I want. It does sound good but it is lacking something. I will check the setup as that might be what it is. But here is my thought process. I have one amp, so if I get the sound I want on my strat I shouldn’t have to re adjust my amp for the les paul. I understand that different guitar and different pickups sound different, but I shouldn’t have to work the amp while on stage. If the Distortion is a hotter JB then that’s probably what I need
