Which do you feel fits my specific needs better?

It will be going into the bridge position of a PRS CE 22. The CE has a mahogany back with a maple top, maple bolt-on neck, and rosewood fingerboard. The amp setup will be a Dual Rectifier.

-I play progressive, intrumental metal
-I play 65 % leads
-Need something to cooperate very well under high-gain
-Must cut through with ease
-Also must be able to handle thick, chunky fifths
-Always standard tuning
-I like the sound of elevated mids, so that each note has a thick bite to it under high-gain. It cannot, however, sound shrilly. For reference, think Petrucci.

Let the recommending begin.

Re: JB or Custom?

I like the Custom for pretty much anything and the JB only in certain guitars and only for lead. I think that you'll like the Custom better all around too.

Re: JB or Custom?

The JB can cut through and has good articulation for leads. That being said, I'm switching the JB to a Custom in my Paul, so I guess in a week or so I can give you an accurate comparison!

Re: JB or Custom?

The custom is a good starting place in SD pickups for most people.

You are doing a large percentage of leads so really either of these pickups will do the job. A little more bass in the Custom, something I favor.

There is enough mass in that CE22 to make the JB a bit darker, but for me it would be the Custom.

Try the Custom first, I'd say.

Hell, buy mine! :laugh2:

I would. But it's important that I get the thirty day retrun policy, just in case the custom isn't for me. Thank you for the offer though.

I really need to learn how to install pickups.. I have a soldering iron, but I'm too afraid to tamper with a new PRS's electronics. How badly could I mess things up? To speak more positively, where can I learn how to install guitar pickups?

Re: JB or Custom?

Ask a tech if you can look over while he does one, preferably yours. All you need to know is how to follow directions and solder.

Re: JB or Custom?

just my opinion...

you should try out your first install on a "beater guitar" ...things could go wrong.

I think the JB should rock in that setup; everyone uses the JB including tool AIC and alot of artists that like soloing like for instance megadeth and tons of others

if you want alot of chunk and brutal sounds, the Custom
if you want something a little tapered back from that I would go with JB

people like the Custom because paired with the Dual Recto you will get alot of low end full of chunk, full sound

I prefer the JB, since it has some chunk if you dial in your recto, but is a little more mellow and not so much like a heavyweight boxer...I have the JB though, so that is just me
