I found the DD, as with all ceramic magnet pickups to sound overly nasally...that's just me though

The DD can sound that way bro
i am thinking of taking it out of my all maghgany lester( 57 RI black beauty) because of that same reason:beerchug:

I think both those pickup are too bright for an ebony fretboarded super-strat.

But that's just MO.

The Kamikaze's are the only ones that had ebony. All the others were maple or rosewood.

Re: JB or DD for my alder Strat

The burst tiger might be but the Skulls and Snakes is definitely rosewood. I saw him play that one live and was right up at the stage. Even in the pic it's too light to be ebony.

Hmm, ok, I stand corrected. The one he played when I saw him was rosewood I know that. He could have been using one of the newer models though, which come with rosewood boards. I wasn't really paying attention to the headstock, which is different on the newer ones. His playing kept my attention.....lol.

Where did I say I played his axe?...lol I've played the Skulls and Snakes sig model before. One sweet axe. It's been on my GAS list for years and one of two sig models I'd actually want, the other being the EBMM EVH Model, not the Axis, but the actual sig model.

If I remember correctly, when ESP started making the Skulls and Snakes for the public, it came with rosewood. I could be wrong though, it may have started with ebony and then changed to rosewood but the one I played was the old headstock, like the photo, and rosewood board. Mid-90's model.

I love maple boards. Never was a fan of ebony. Rosewood I can deal with. It's on my Kramer and honestly, needs it to avoid being to bright since the body is maple. I like the rosewood board on my LP a lot. Very comfortable and easy to play on.

That looks like rosewood to me....either that or really crummy ebony. But even his site says different I remember that guitar always having a rosewood fretboard. I think his site is wrong actually.

Re: JB or DD for my alder Strat

the custom custom eh? would you say that pup and a 500k pot would work?...and how about the capacitor?.....I have a rio bbq in mine with a .047 cap right now but my tone isn't fat enough.

DD if those are your two choices. However, I recommend the CC for an alder strat. Hell, I recommend it for everything....lol. I'm like Wicked Lester is with the DD when it comes to the CC.....almost....lol. Seriously though, I think the DD would be better unless you use a .047uf tone cap with the JB.

Sure would. The CC needs a 500k pot anyway. Any lower and it may go muddy on you. I asked somebody about that already.

You can leave the tone cap as is or change it to taste. A .022 cap might be better for the CC if you have a tone control.

Don't forget that part of getting a fat tone is not just the guitar, but the amp too. If you play through a tin can, no matter what guitar you use, it's gonna still sound like a tin can.

Re: JB or DD for my alder Strat

5150,

Long time man. Howdy?

I'd say check them invaders. I am not a big fan of high output buckers, and don't like the JB and the DD. But from what I understand the invader is basically a JB/DD with 3 ceramic magnets and them weird pole pieces. But it sure sounds thick! Still has highs, and a very high output. I loved it in a guitar of mine with a floyd bridge. That guitar sounded thin with anything but a CC and a Invader! ;)

Of course CC would work real well, but it wouldn't be a real high output HB.

Good luck,

B
