JB or JB8 - Les Paul Custom

Hi!
What would you guys prefer for metal in D tuning, in a Gibson Les Paul Custom ?
I`ve got a Gibson V with a standard JB which works great with my amp.
What can I expect with an alnico 8 magnet for D tuning compared to the regular magnet ?

Actually it`s a JBJ I have ready for to put in my LPC
So, standard alnico 5 or alnico 8 guys ?

The A8 has a deeper bass, more mids and more volume. I call the JB a Distortion lite. I'd say go with the A8. If its too much bass, go back to the A5.

I typically tune down a half step on my Les Paul. It did not do so well with the JB, the DD, or the JB8. However, once I tuned down a step further than that, the JB8 was just what the doctor ordered. I don't think you'll be overpowered by bass, to be honest. It's definitely not as tight as the Distortion, but not as loose as the stock JB. Of course, I think the A8 may be the perfect bridge magnet, so take this review with a grain of salt.

P.S. I think I made a flying leap onto the Custom bandwagon this past week, but I've never tested real downtuned stuff with it.

When put an alnico 8 magnet in my JB, the lows got bigger/deeper but tighter, the highs rounded off, and the upper mid spike spread out to be more of a mid hump than a spike. Initially I was worried that I'd loose too much attack with the rounded off highs, but I can still hear myself just fine, even in a band mix.

if you're looking at putting a JB in an les paul and tuning down for metal, unless you've got really clean technique i'd recommend against the stock A5. i haven't tried the A8 in one but would imagine it'd be better, a ceramic mag would definitely help too

I think this is heading for mud city.

I love the JB in my Soloist, but in an LP, I'm not so sure.

And in a de-tuned LP, I'd really take another look at something else.

Full Shred, Custom flavor, or Dime.

+1. JB8. The stock JB is very hit or miss in mahogany.
