Jb push pull tone stuck?

Hey all, I got a Kramer Baretta recently with a SD JB coil split push pull feature. Only one volume knob, no neck pick up so no switch either. I certainly hear a difference between humbucker and single coil mode but I feel like it doesn’t completely disengage. Still sound very surfy and twangy on humbucker mode. Is this how this is voiced? Or do you suppose there’s an issue with it? Compared to my other regular humbucker guitars it’s still a very single coil ish tone also. Is it possible to just not have to coil split and be a regular jb?

The nature of switching with electronics is that there is either a connection.....or there is not. There is not 'part' of a connection.

Try checking the K reading on the hot and ground in both split and full modes. I think the JB is 16k and change so a reading will tell you very quickly if the pickup is damaged in any way. They can still work in certain circumstances in a limited way even if a coil has a break due to the A/C signal

good call. Thanks. It is in fact 16k and 4 k when pulled out. Maybe this Kramer is just twangy by design. I might try and swap the pick up and see what I hear anyway if no one else has any other ideas before tomorrow.

I’m not exactly sure what this pick up is supposed to do, I didn’t realize it was a push pull pot for a couple weeks after I bought it. I know it sound like it’s a coil split, sounds very much like a single coil. I just checked the Sweetwater listing and it says it switches the pick up out of phase.

Honestly I do not care for push pull gimmicks. I want to just put in a normal 500k pot and wire it as a normal jb. I just don’t know which wires to use

Well, a phase switch only works if you have 2 pickups, so that ain't it. I think we really need to see how this thing is wired to see what it going on. Can you post some clear pics of the wiring?

Ok now I’m really confused because the pot has a tone cap on it. I don’t see any wiring diagrams for 1hum 1 vol that has a tone cap on the pot

im guessing thats a treble bleed cap to retain high end when you roll the volume down. i dont care for them, some people do. and that is series/parallel wiring

^ Yep.
Parallel wired (but the 4k reading said that already) and the treble bleed cap. The latter helps keep treble in the signal as you roll down, but a lot of people find it very harsh as the treble is unnaturally high compared to the rest of the signal content.
This is actually the same effect and wiring as as bright cap in a pedal/amp.

All four conductor HB's can be wired that way; I don't see anything in that wiring that would require a 'special' pickup.

yep, just a normal jb, which can be a great pup! i have one in the bridge of my tele and i love it
