Re: JB versus Tone Zone
First off, floyd's don't rob any of my tone. You probably need to find a better quality guitar.
JB vs. TZ...
When I think of the JB, I think of Hair bands. Ratt, Dokken and others. I love their music, but I never really bonded with the JB. It is a PU that really feels alive and uncompressed. My problem with the PU is that in Jackson's and Charvel's I've played it in, while I love it's upper mids, I can't stand it's ice-picky treble response. I've thought about putting one in my LP, but don't know if the low-mid heavy LP would take some of the harshness away.
The Tone Zone is my favorite pickup of any PU I've ever tried. I have one in a a Charvel San Dimas and while I have a H/S/S setup in my Charvel, I'd feel comfy if it were a single bridge humbucker guitar with nothing else. I like the overall feel and the live sound from my TZ. It too can get a little ice-picky as far as the highs go, but there seems to be a rich end cutoff that the JB doesn't have. Sometimes I wish the TZ had a little more precieved output. That's my only real complaint.
I think the JB sounds better when on recordings.
If you want smoothness like a TZ and the mids and attack of a JB, maybe you could check out a SD Custom Shop RTM. That might get the job done. Anyone else think the RTM might fit the bill? Or am I really confused?
...and BTW, my vote went to the Tone Zone.
