Re: JB vs 498T
490R's absolutely need 500k's to get more life out of them, especially if paired with a 498T. It's a matter of opinion whether 498T's 'sound better' with 500K's. There's no universal consensus. I don't think they do; they're a very bright, thin PU and to me that needs to be tamed with 250K's. I have a 498T/490R pair in an SG; the 490R has an A5 and 500K's, the 498T has an UOA5 and 250K's. It's my best-sounding, heaviest-sounding SG. Both the neck and bridge balance very well tone-wise, which is not the case when they have the stock magnets (bright bridge-dark neck, and many people complain about that and replace them).
Remember that if you have tried the 498T in a Gibson production guitar, chances are that it has 300k volume pots in it. Are they that dark with 500k pots?. I have one in an SG Std., and have yet to upgrade to 500k volume pots, which most guys say brings out a better sound in both the 490 neck and 498 bridge sounds.
