JB vs. Breed

Re: JB vs. Breed

Both are great pickups. :D

They are both midrange oriented, and very similar EQ curve wise.

The JB has a bit more "snarl" and output, and the Breed is a bit more polite and refined.

The Breed has two sets of adjustable polepieces that REALLY allow you to fine tune the balance of your strings. Nice.

The Air Zone is very similar to both of them with a bit more highs than both and slightly more open (less mids). But very similar. Very very clear.

All three pickups are excellent and very musical sounding. The Breed doesn't get the attention that many pickups get, but it deserves it. It is a great pickup.

Having said all that I like the JB better. I think it has more character. Whether you like that character or not is individual taste.

Re: JB vs. Breed

Can you compare the AIR ZONE and BREED a bit more? I love the AIR ZONE, but I found the highs to be tapered off like the CC. It is an open sounding pickup for a high gain monster, but the AZ seems a tad too compressed being so powerful. It reminds me of a rounder, more open SUPER DISTORTION. the JB seems to have the screaming highs, but is not as robust as the AZ to my ears, so I wonder how the Breed fits into this JB v Breed comparison, in that I have little experience with the Breed.

what is the mid signature like? lower or higher mids? does it squeal as much with harmonics? Does it slam the front end of an old Marshall?

Probably because the evolution sucks whatever attention the breed might have gotten...

What you are describing to me sounds like a Tone Zone, not an Air Zone.

The AZ has no where near as much output or distortion as the Super Distortion (or the TZ).

My ears hear the JB as more "robust" than the AZ, but pickup height affects the result ENORMOUSLY. You can't compare apples and oranges.

The Breed is loud and definitely will hit the front of a Marshall with a nice midrange push, but it is NOT a "high power" affair like an SD or TZ.

The Breed is voiced more in the mid-mids and lower mids. The JB is voiced more in the mid mids and upper mids. THe AZ has a bit less mids than both, maybe a bit more highs and bass, but only slightly.

This is just in my guitar through my amps and with my setup and with my playing style. Results will vary. :D

Re: JB vs. Breed

I guess what I am trying to find is a pickup that is a touch hotter than a JB, a little thicker, and a little more process. I am putting it in a floyd equipt alder bodied guitar.

Re: JB vs. Breed

I did use BOTH the AZ and TZ and its been a while, so I thank you for any perspective. I actually changed away from the AZ and Air Norton bridge when I went all Duncan for a change in tone. At the same time I changed my whole rig from small Fenders to huge Marshalls - hey I go thru these moments! So your descriptions are great! Thanks!
