JB with A2 magnet for less bass

Would a JB with a degaussed A2 magnet have less bass than a regular A2 magnet? I'm thinking of trying this out. I would like to get less bass than a standard JB with an A5 but still have the bottom stay somewhat on the tighter side.

Re: JB with A2 magnet for less bass

The bass is not as tight - - but I think in a bright guitar it's perfectly usable. I think it's a great choice for the JB, but I don't think it's what you're after - based on what you're asking for.

I've never found the standard JB to be overly bassy. Try lowering the bass side of the pickup a little. Maybe try cutting the bass on your amp?

It's not the amplifier, I keep the bass low already. I like the JB in stock form for leads but that low E on the JB is just on the boomy side to me anyway, I've tried several of them old and new so I was just maybe going to experiment a little with an A2 magnet. I thought I read somewhere that degaussed would have even less bass.

JB2's are great PU's in mahogany, and for me, a big improvement over the stock ones. Whenever I have a boomy neck PU, I lower the bass side of the PU, and takes dials down the low-end.

Re: JB with A2 magnet for less bass

JB2 has less bass than the stock JB, it actually feels tighter through my amp, it's a really good pickup, but yeah, for a bright guitar. HUGE mids, very 80's metal sound.

Re: JB with A2 magnet for less bass

try 3 hex-head screws under your wound strings before you start surgery

Re: JB with A2 magnet for less bass

in my experience the JB2 was a great souding pickup but sounded a little small all around.
so if your not into thunderous metal tones that require wall of sound then the JB2 is actually quite amazing.
there is less bass and its a loose feeling pickup. when you strum it feels like your fingers are placed wrong or the attack is slow, something like that.
but the highs were really smooth sounding and didnt have the those high end hiss artifacts associated with high gain. if i ever get three guitars one of them will have a JB2 for cleaner lite rock.

If you go on Seymours tone chart you`ll see the JB already has light bass response compared to many other pups, I think for L/M/H its 5/8/9 that would make a fairly bright pup.

My bad,, the JB is 5/6/8 the duncan distortion is 5/8/9

Re: JB with A2 magnet for less bass

Question to who has a JB2, how would the Eq be quantified? 4/6/7 ?

I'd say lots of mids, like 7 or 8, and treble no higher than 7. Bass is there, maybe 5 or 6. This is in an LP Studio, so it'll sound a little different in other guitars.

that is something I like but is hard to attain, I like sag and tight at the same time but there is always a trade-off.

Re: JB with A2 magnet for less bass

I'd say 4/8/7 is about right. It is a little loose, it's not bad at all though, it can easily play thrash chuggs and do fine, unless you're one of those people that runs your bass on your amp crazy high. The only problem I had with mine was that I wanted more power, the UOA5 DD cured that problem. Was best in a LP type and a mahogany baritone, in my SG it left something to be desired. Try it, chances are you'll like it.

Sounds interesting, I like the DD but ceramic mags are just so unmusical to me.

well, I just made my first magnet purchase. will this A2 work in a Trembucker, or did I need the shorter ones they sell?
