JB with Alnico 4...well, I did it!!

Sometimes ago, a forum member was asking about swapping magnets on the JB, using Alnico 4.
Everyone was answering, talking about Alnico 2, Alnico 8...yadda yadda, but no Alnico 4. At least, having experience with it.
Since I bought one of those loved/hated pickups, and having some magnet bars, I tried.

Well...not the big deal. Nice, but I prefer the JB as it is, with Alnico 5, right now.

Yes, it´s true that higher frequencies sound a little bit smooth, and you have more mids, but I have less bass frequencies, too.
The general result was a flat pickup with more mids, nothing really that I like it very much, because it didn´t have the smoother Alnico 2 response, it has the strange harshness that JB normally have with Alnico 5.

Haven´t tried Alnico 2 or 8, Wymore guitars was closing when I decided to bought some of them. Murphy´s law, I guess...

Well the A4 mag into that particular wind doesn't match very well... the results you had are more and less the same that everybody else had. Not BAD, but not appealing by any means.

A2 and A8 are THE magnets to try in this p'up.

i'm actually a bit partial to a3 in the JB, it gives it a certain vintage flavor that i really like. fat, clear mids with articulate highs and not quite as much low end, which i like in a bridge pickup.

+1. The JB's highs need some serious taming, and an A4 might not be up to the challenge. I like the JB2 myself.

I have an Alnico 3 magnet, may be is a good idea to try.
I tried it in a Custom, but didn´t liked too much.
It´s true what you say, in general, but with the Custom I had some nasty high frequencies.
I can try with the JB, to listen what happens.

Anyone knows a good site where to buy Alnico 2 and 8 magnets? I live outside USA, I need something that accept payment using Western Union, and international shipping.
Wymore guitars is closing, and John isn´t answering my mails, I suppose he´s no more interested to send things, outside USA. I saw he has some Alnico 8 magnet, still.

Check on eBay. I just ordered some. Get them rough cast if possible.
