The high mids in the JB8 do get annoying at times, but sometimes it's badassery, good with the bad, I guess. It's nearly impossible to get a neck pickup to sound semi-cohesive with it, and I don't even like my neck to sound all that much like my bridge.

I love the JB8 in my Charvel San Dimas. I converted the neck 59 to alnico 4, which I like better than the stock but I'm still not quite convinced. I'll probably just get another Pearly Gates neck.

I have a JVM and biasing it is no more hairy than biasing anything else. If you follow the standard safety precautions (which are all over the web), there's no reason you can't bias your amp. In fact, unless you know your existing tubes are bad, you should bias yours, mine were cold and sound a whole lot better after I biased them up a bit. Something else that would benefit you is the C83 mod. Just remove the C83 bypass cap from the circuit and it reduces the gain a bit as well as sounding a little more full & open while still leaving PLENTY of usable gain. It also helps with noise & feedback at high gain. Go to http://www.jvmforum.com to research these topics and many more.

Did your San Dimas sound good out of the gate? wonder if I got a bum one. Sounds good now though. Only took a truss rod adjustment, big block upgrade, tremlo stop & a different magnet to get there, but that is half the fun.

I have read all that and been there, what does remove the cap mean? snip the wire?

It's too close to the board to snip, you have 2 choices. You can gently wiggle it until it breaks off the leads. I know it sounds crazy but it's really no big deal as long as you don't go in and yank it out like a tooth. The othe way is to unsolder it, but that requires removing the board which is a pain in the ass. Some people unsolder it and wire it to a switch so you can take it in or out of the circuit.

I wiggled mine out and don't miss it a bit. If I ever need to return it to stock I'll just buy a new cap (I kept the old one for reference) and solder it in.

When I got it, I liked it just fine. A few months later, I bought another Charvel, a So-Cal. I upgraded the So-Cal with Duncan Custom Custom bridge and Pearly Gates neck pickups, and now that guitar is astonishing. My ears got so used to the Custom Custom though that the stock JB in the San Dimas started sounding shrill to me. I tried a JB2, an alnico 2 upgrade, but I thought the guitar just sounded flat, no life. The JB8 has plenty of muscle, clarity, guts. Mids are strong, there is top without ice pick and the bottom is tight. Perfect for the hard rock and metal I want to play on that guitar.

That's the only change. I didn't find it necessary to upgrade the block or saddles.

I'm a bit scared to take the A5 out of my JB. Mine is from the early 80's, before they even stamped Seymour Duncan on the baseplate, so I don't want to screw up the mojo any, even if that just means moving some of the wax potting around by removing the magnet. Silly probably.

Get a new JB and use that. Yours could become worth millions in 30 years!

It was super easy and I highly doubt mass produced guitar pickups will become more valuable over time
