Who uses (used) them. I know kiss did and Tommy Thayer still does.

Billy Gibbons used/uses them live....his rig changes a lot, but a guitar mag I got in 2002 listed them as his main live amp. I can't think of any others off the top of my head, but I know quite a few early 90's alternative bands used them.

Re: jcm 900

dave navarro of jane's addiction. uses them(jcm900) for his dirty tones and uses a MF350 for his cleans.

Re: jcm 900

Rivers-Weezer
Dave Grohl-First Foo record is all JCM900
Billy Gibbons-Live
Dave Navarro-uses them with Jane's, also used them with RHCP, and for his solo record
Tom Delonge-Uses them for his clean tone...vol set very low
Pat Smear-Nirvana
Larry LaLonde-Primus
BucketHead-BucketHead
Belinda Butcher-My Bloody Valentine
Ian Mackaye-Fugazi
Joey Santiago-Pixies

The list goes on, and on, and on...

Re: jcm 900

Thanks just curious I like the sound and may get one soon. I would say it would do late 80's metal pretty good. I got a jcm 800 but my mode it noisy.

Re: jcm 900

.......I've seen Pat Travers more than a few times in the last couple of years and he was using the JCM 900....sounded pretty damn good too, loud as hell , but great tone none the less with his double cut Les Paul with white EMGs.

Re: jcm 900

I know at one point Tom from Blink-182 was using a JCM900 for his cleans and his Mesa Triple Rectifier for distortion. He ran those 2 heads through 3 Mesa 4x12 Cabs. I believe that was back on the Enema Of The State Album.

One of the guitarists from Jimmy Eat World uses a JCM900 also.

I think one of the guitarists of Sum-41 uses JCM900's.

Re: jcm 900

The JCM900 is the "black sheep" of the marshall family..many people say they are bad.

They are not the best Marshall around, but they still sound great, and can be hand CHEAP because no one wants them it seems. Great bang for the $$$!

+1 WORD UP!!!! I am very happy with mine. I have also heard that Tom Morello of Rage Against the machine and AudioSlave either uses them or has used them.

Will it get good 80's metal high gain stuff? Skid Row, Motley, etc. Does it sound like a modded JCM 800?

Most definitely: yes, you just have to be careful with treble and presence settings. These amps are quick-biting as hell and as a side effect it is really easy to set some icepick-tone with them. If you keep this in mind, the dirrty tonal range can be dialed from AC/DC to Korn. Of course if you max everything it still can't reach a Rectoid insane gain level but something really close.

If you want a hot-rodded '80s JCM800-like sound, try a JCM900 SL-X head and leave the gain/preamp knobs somewhere around noon and you're there. It's all-tube (i.e. no diode clipping distortion circuit as other JCM900 amps have) and a helluva lo-cost amp. The difference between an SL-X and a normal 900 head is something like a tube amp with a good overdrive pedal (normal JCM900) or a tube amp with extra gain mod: +1 tube (SL-X).

Morello uses JCM 800 2205, 50 watt head and a Peavey 4x12 Cab. He has never changed the tubes in his head either.
