JCM800 Low input...What pedal to drive?

back in the nineties at the hight of Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day etc... I found that i liked to use my JCM800's Low input driven by an MXR Microamp. Problem is, it's a bit clean still. I want to either put something in front of the MXR or use something else. I really hate the boxiness and low end loss of most pedals.
Should i look at tubes? I want that thick furry sort of drive. Like the amp but with some voicing options.
I used to have a Rat which was cool but a bit too 'clangy' in the highs. The clips of the Duncan Twin Tube seem good. Others i've been thinking of: MXR ZW-44, MXR GT-OD, Zinky True Grit, MXR Doubleshot, DOD Punkifier....????

Boss graphic EQ. Turn the level way up for gain...EQ to taste for voicing and more gain. Overdrives tend to change the sound a lot...boxy.

Maybe a Klon...they leave the character of the guitar fairly intact.

A clone of the Way Huge Red Llama might be nice. (Or original, if you can swing it. ;))

It gives a huge boost, and some nice gain that ranges from amp-like to mor fuzz-like as you turn it up. I love the fact that it sounds nothing like TS, no hump, very transparent.

How about the Duncan pickup booster, or another high impedance clean boost? (ZVex Super Hard On) Obviously, they have no clipping, but they can really push the input of a Marshall into nice breakup.

what model of JCM 800 is it... head?, combo?

my 2204 sounds brighter thru my 150 watt 1x12... it has a lot more thumb thru better speakers in a good 4x12... there is a lot of good pedals on the market of late... trick with a single channel 800 is to keep the amp's gain down and use the pedal for as much dirt as you want..

for some serious low end, over the top fuzz, i use a cheap Danolectro Fab Tone.... it does that Pumpkin's era sound no problem...
