JD in bridge and I lost my nice middle position sound

Hello,

I was hoping for some technical help. I just installed a Jerry Donahue on my MIM Telecaster 50's Classic. The PUP direcly replaced the stock bridge and is wired in EXACTLY as the other one. The only thing is - the SD seems like it's out of phase with my neck PUP. I really liked that mid position sound and now it sounds like a strat - hate that sound. Can anyone tell me how to get these two pickups in phase without messing with the sound of my JD - which I like very much so far. Thanks

Bob

You have a phase problem and it's common when SD and Fender pickups get mixed. While it is possible to change the phase of that pickup it's not nessessarily an easy thing to do. The easiest solution is to replace your neck pickup with a SD pickup as well.

Thanks. Any suggestions for a nice neck PUP to go with the JD? Somebody told me I could get them in phase by just soldering the JD wires reversed from the instructions. Isn't the PUP engineered specifically to have the ground a certain way?

Re: JD in bridge and I lost my nice middle position sound

I had this problem with my Am. Std. Tele.
I de-soldered the small ground wire from the bridge pickup's elevation plate and black wire and attached a new wire from the elevation plate to the white wire.

I then reversed the black and white wire positions on the schematic.

A nice neck pickup to go with the JD? I like the SM-1 mini humbucker that I have in my Tele with a JD. If you want to retain the stock look, you can go with an Alnico II Pro rythm pickup, an Antiquity rythm for tele, or a vintage rythm for tele.

I've had that problem on a PRS and Strat. On the PRS, I ended up doing what Robert said, just buy a Duncan neck pup. On the strat, I'd like some advise on how to make my Duncan C-5 jive with the R/W R/P strat middle pickup. Now, the 2nd pos sounds like a nasty midrangey honk.

Thanks. Guess I put the solder away too soon. Got to order another PUP.

Re: JD in bridge and I lost my nice middle position sound

Well, for a quick fix you can just reverse the leads of the neck pickup. If you do it to the bridge pickup, you're going to have to reverse the leads and clip the wire that's attanched to the baseplate. If you want a good Tele replacement neck pickup, IMHO, there's not much better than a DiMarzio Twang King.

Re: JD in bridge and I lost my nice middle position sound

Unsolder the connections at the neck pickup itself and just switch the black and white wires around. It's fairly easy. Run the white wire to the terminal that now has the black wire in it and vice versa. Also move the uninsulated wire that connects to the chrome cover to the other terminal. Often they just run the black wire through the terminal and extend it through another 3/4" and solder THAT to the underside of the chrome cover of the neck pickup or bassplate of the bridge pickup. If you need a new neck pickup, the Alnico II Pro is the one Duncan recommends. I have a used one with less than an hour's use if you need one. Lew
