Jeff Loomis Pickups

Re: Jeff Loomis Pickups

They're Sd's take on the 66/57 set.

They look and sound good, but will they really do as well as that set has done?

Re: Jeff Loomis Pickups

You know what, I have zero doubt about Jeff Loomis knowing exactly what he wants in a pickup, or Seymour Duncan being able to deliver it.

Re: Jeff Loomis Pickups

We're very pleased with the results, as is Jeff. They are definitely my favorite active pickups to date. Very dynamic and articulate. All the benefits of an active pup with an authentically passive tone. Looking forward to folks checking em' out and letting us know whatcha think.

When will the specs be listed?

Re: Jeff Loomis Pickups

Specs will go up on the website next month. In the meantime, I'll try to get something up here after NAMM.

Re: Jeff Loomis Pickups

Demo sounds fantastic, though it is the man himself playing. I'm curious where it fits in specs/output-wise against other SD and EMG actives.

Re: Jeff Loomis Pickups

They sound great to me. Even better than the EMG 57/66 which I've tried before.

I'd definitely get a set. Put together a Warmoth and drop them in, game over.

Re: Jeff Loomis Pickups

I'm definitely excited for these and the new Devin Townsend "Transcendence" Fishman Fluence set...oh boy! Need more guitars to put them in, ha ha!

Re: Jeff Loomis Pickups

I thought the 66/57 set was EMG's take on the Mustaine Livewires?
Not at all. They're both powered by Alnico 5 and are both active, but I'm pretty sure their winds, coil geometry, and respective preamps are entirely different.

Re: Jeff Loomis Pickups

The biggest similarity between the 57/66 set and the Mustaine LiveWires would be their arguably more passive-like response, restrained output and increased headroom compared to most traditional active offerings (classic EMGs, Blackouts, etc), but I've never heard that the Mustaines inspired the 57/66.

Sales-wise, it seems they both appeal to different segments of the active pickup market, although they cover similar tonal ground.

Of course, if Duncan would just *****ing offer the Mustaines in BLACK already, they would greatly expand the market appeal of them. :soapbox:

But noooooOOOOoooo....Instead, Jeff Loomis gets the cool cover treatment on his pickups!

How cool would it be to have a Mustaine V.2 with similar covers? :headbang:

I cannot speak for the Mustaines since I haven't tried them, but the 57/66 uses the same preamp as the standard non-X series, and the output level of the 57 is about the same as the 81, so, technically, it's not got any more headroom at all. Yeah, it *may* come across as more "dynamic" to some because it's got a tiny bit more attack because of the poles rather than blades and a slightly more open, less high-mid focused EQ, but there's a ton of "OMGz iTz m0ar pazzive!" hype surrounding the 57/66 set. I don't mean to pick on you, and not to say the 57 doesn't sound killer, but I find sometimes people take EMG's marketing strategy too seriously and think the 57 is incredible, highly advanced and infinitely superior compared to the rest of the EMG models when it really isn't all that different. The 57 is good, but so are the 81, 85, 60, etc.

My understanding (which may indeed be incorrect) was that the 66/57 set was going to be the EMG Mustaine set when Mustaine's contract with Duncan expired but then he decided to sign a new contract with Duncan.

Re: Jeff Loomis Pickups

I remember early speculation that Mustaine and EMG had been working on a signature set, but I never saw any reputable source confirm that.

I myself wondered if the 57/66 set might have been one of the rejected sets from the many prototypes they made for Hetfield, but, again, no proof that I know of...

Still excited for the Jeff Loomis pickups and the new Fishman stuff

Re: Jeff Loomis Pickups

The Mustaine set had nothing to do with EMG. I suggested that Dave go to a signature active pickup set at the same time SD decided to push big into the active world--but before the launch of Blackouts. Dave was already a big fan of the JB. The LW-MUST set was basically an active version of the Hod Rodded Humbucker set. You can read more about the genesis of these pickups here.

Sorry for the hijack.
