We're very pleased with the results, as is Jeff. They are definitely my favorite active pickups to date. Very dynamic and articulate. All the benefits of an active pup with an authentically passive tone. Looking forward to folks checking em' out and letting us know whatcha think.
I thought the 66/57 set was EMG's take on the Mustaine Livewires? They're Sd's take on the 66/57 set.
They look and sound good, but will they really do as well as that set has done?
Not at all. They're both powered by Alnico 5 and are both active, but I'm pretty sure their winds, coil geometry, and respective preamps are entirely different.I thought the 66/57 set was EMG's take on the Mustaine Livewires?
I cannot speak for the Mustaines since I haven't tried them, but the 57/66 uses the same preamp as the standard non-X series, and the output level of the 57 is about the same as the 81, so, technically, it's not got any more headroom at all. Yeah, it *may* come across as more "dynamic" to some because it's got a tiny bit more attack because of the poles rather than blades and a slightly more open, less high-mid focused EQ, but there's a ton of "OMGz iTz m0ar pazzive!" hype surrounding the 57/66 set. I don't mean to pick on you, and not to say the 57 doesn't sound killer, but I find sometimes people take EMG's marketing strategy too seriously and think the 57 is incredible, highly advanced and infinitely superior compared to the rest of the EMG models when it really isn't all that different. The 57 is good, but so are the 81, 85, 60, etc.The biggest similarity between the 57/66 set and the Mustaine LiveWires would be their arguably more passive-like response, restrained output and increased headroom compared to most traditional active offerings (classic EMGs, Blackouts, etc), but I've never heard that the Mustaines inspired the 57/66.
My understanding (which may indeed be incorrect) was that the 66/57 set was going to be the EMG Mustaine set when Mustaine's contract with Duncan expired but then he decided to sign a new contract with Duncan. Not at all.
