Jerry Donahue or 5-2

I have a tele with a 5-2 in the bridge. I like this pickup very much. I have a second tele that I want to install a new bridge pickup.

I'm thinking either another 5-2 or a Jerry Donahue.

I really like that snappy 'piano wire' clean popping country sound on the low wound strings.

I'm concerned the Donahue might be a little mushy on the low strings. But I like the fact it's a little hotter pickup than the 5-2.

(I tried a Broadcaster....WAY too bright.)

Any comments? Can anyone compare/contrast these two pickups?

Re: Jerry Donahue or 5-2

Have you tried the Fender CS No-Caster Treble PU yet?

Re: Jerry Donahue or 5-2

I use a 5-2 in the neck of one of my strats for that exact reason, But in the bridge of a tele (or a strat) even with a PuP w/t A2 mags. I don't imagine mush being a problem. The Twangbanger is a A2 PuP, In the bridge of my strat... No mush issue's at all. I like the specs on the JD,If I build another tele I'm going w/t the Donahue. maybe a 5-2 in the neck.:D

No, I'm not one to swap pickups around.

And I'd like to avoid trying/swaping all sorts of pickups. The SD tone comparison chart is a great thing, and it's the main reason why I use SD pickups. Most other (Dimarzio, Fralins) don't have such a description. Lollar is better than most, but still seems incomplete. And I pay little attention to sound clips...unless I know they're playing throught the same amp/speakers with the same settings.

Re: Jerry Donahue or 5-2

the jd is a great tele bridge pup. warmer and fatter than classic fender but not too far away from vintage. it doesnt have the snap that a5 magnets do on the bottom strings but it is no where near muddy

+1 my experience with the JD is pretty much the same

Re: Jerry Donahue or 5-2

It's a very nice pickup if you want something in vintage territory but aren't crazy about a bright blackguard sound...

Re: Jerry Donahue or 5-2

Have been using my JD for the last 6 or 7 years. Am not too sure. Anyways, still love that pickup! I think it is quite alive on the wound strings too. Mushy? No way. In fact, if you found a Broadcaster trebly, JD would be the next step I would choose.

Briefly tried a 5/2 way back when! :banghead:

Don't remember much tho. But I kept the JD. ;)

B :)
