Re: Jet City 22H comes today
Right now I will have to play it through the celestion gt12-75 I have in my jcm 800 combo. I'll post what it sounds like later tonight.
On a side note if anyone has experience with these and has a better suggestion for a speaker i am open.
I'll give my experience with the JCA20H, which is just the crunch channel on the JCA22H. I tried it with the stock speaker, and it wasn't bad. It wasn't great but it wasn't bad. It was a little less defined than I would have liked, but that could have been the stock tubes. I suspect it was the speaker, though.
I came home and ran it through two Governors, and I got the same feeling out of the cab as I did with the Distortion in my Les Paul. There was too much piercing in the upper mid department. The clarity was impeccable. You could get a touch of breakup, but every crunch was completely present in the upper mids. The problem was that that's all there was.
I finally swapped out one of the two Governors for a Wizard, and that made all the difference in the world. It filled out the sound, added some bass, and made the crunch much more organic. It wasn't a stabbing, piercing sound anymore. It was full and well-defined. It took some of the focus away from that narrow frequency band, but it still maintained plenty of clarity. It packs a thick, tight crunch now, but with plenty of fullness.
So that's where I am now, and the only thing I ever consider doing is adding a second 2x12 with Greenbacks. But I've been thinking about that for years and haven't done anything about it. I doubt it'll happen soon, because I really don't think there's a big hole in my tone due to the cab and speakers. I actually think it's probably one of the biggest strengths of my rig.
