JJ Tesla in a Bogner? Traynor?

I realize Bogner recommends Svet's. Since they milk a lot out of 2 EL34's I am inclined to agree they know what's up.

Can JJ's hold up in Bogners and Traynors with those high voltages? any other tubes come to mind? What tonal differences will you get?

How about 12ax7's in the Shiva? Chinese only, or will JJ's or Ei's etc do the trick?

I've read about folks trying everything from alternate modern production tubes to NOS tubes, what sounded the best? Svetlana power tubes and Chinese 9th gen preamp tubes.

When the designer of the amplifier flat out says that combination works the best, I just laugh when other people try to prove him wrong. In the end, some folks are "shocked" that the designer of the amplifier knows what works best :smack: Go ahead and try power tubes that can't handle the plate voltages that the Shiva puts out, you won't get very far.

The beauty of the Shiva is that it was designed around regular modern production tubes. You don't need fancy NOS tubes in there because it simply sounds better with the cheaper stuff. ;)

I use JJ EL-34's, because they have a glassy high headroom. I definitely don't need the extra output of E-34L's in a 120W amp, but I like those in 40/50 watt amps. Since Bogners are already a compressed Marshall sound, I don't necessarily want compressed sounding tubes like Svets. They're great tubes, but JJ's sound fine and hold up well. I will say that I've experimented with pre tubes, and came right back to what Reinhold says to use....Chinese. GT12AX7C's are what sounded best after my swapping trials, and that's what Reinhold likes too. The GT M's sounded a little muddy in it, but they sound great in my Matchless and Gibson Goldtone. As far as I'm concerned, I'm going to keep using JJ power tubes and GT pre tubes. I have zero complaints about that combination.

If I remember correctly, Bogner recommends the JJ E34Ls for the Uberschall, so I suspect JJs rank high enough on the totem pole for Bogners. I think they are great power tubes, I like both the E34Ls and the 6L6s from JJ.
