JJ vs Sovtek?

Should I swap out the Sovtek 12AX7WC's that came stock in my Princeton Reverb RI for JJ 12AX7's? Does changing preamp tubes really make a difference?

Re: JJ vs Sovtek?

My Princeton clone came with Groove Tubes preamp tubes and I swapped them out for JJs (the first two spots, V1 & V2) and it warmed up the amp quite a bit to my liking. I did this on my Tweed Twin as well, sounds great!

Re: JJ vs Sovtek?

It should make a pretty noticeable difference depending on which tube you use. Most any quality tube should be better than what you have now. The JJ's are a real warm tube but some complain that they lack top end. I didnt like the JJ 12ax7 in my high gain ENGL but I do like it in my little valve jr. For my main rig I really liked the Sovtek LPS. I found them to be an organic sounding tube great for cleans and distortion.

Re: JJ vs Sovtek?

Not a fan of JJ preamp tubes but I do like their poweramp tubes......I love the Tung-Sol reissue 12ax7. Just my $0.02 USD

Re: JJ vs Sovtek?

My suggestion would be to buy 3 or 4 12AX7s and experiment with them in the V1 spot. That tube has the biggest effect on tone. Tung Sol, Shuguang (9th generation Chinese), JJ and Electro Harmonix would be a reasonable start.

After you've found the one you like best for V1, you can play with the remainders in the other spots.

+1 for tung-sol.

warm and sweet with plenty gain. even the "new production" ones kick butt for $13.

I use jj el84s.

+1 on that one bro!
I'm using Tung-Sol 12AX7's in my Engl Preamp, and Tung-Sol 5881's in my Marshall 9200 Poweramp. I'm using Electro-Harmonix 12AT7 and 12AX7's in the preamp side of the '92. I'd use Tung Sol's but they dont make a 12AT7....

But if I had to choose between JJ's and Sovteks, Id choose Sovtek's because they have a tighter low end, and a better mid range in my opinion...

Re: JJ vs Sovtek?

I love EH 12ax7's for preamp tubes.... they sound great in everything. I like them more than Sovtek, that's for sure. Power tubes are a different story though.

Re: JJ vs Sovtek?

I expect JJ to be a little more reliable and durable, than New Sensor tubes, especially the power tubes, but the JJ pre's are darker sounding, perhaps too dark and murky.

New Sensor is like General Motors with a pethora of band names. Sovtek, EH, Svetlana.....ect.... Buick, Pontiac, Chevy...

Great advice. Never hurts to have several variates of tubes on hand...

But honestly, there's really only a handful of factories making tubes today. Probably less then a dozen... and most of the major brands are made in the same places. The difference is that JJ, Ruby, Boogie or whomever has the tubes made to their specs and then grades what comes in according to their specs.

So I find it a little baffling when it's said that Sovteks suck, or EH tubes suck... Well ok! Which ones?!? A Sovtek LPS sounds quite different then a WB or WXT... and what did you stick 'em in? There's a lot to be said for voicing tubes to the circuit...

Hopefully Myles will chime in here...
