Has anyone seen Joanne Shaw Taylor in concert? Her new album, White Sugar, sounds pretty impressive. Tasty guitar playing and sing. She'll be touring the USA starting in early December.

Re: Joanne Shaw Taylor

I'd never even heard of her until I saw her name on this thread.

Re: Joanne Shaw Taylor

Y porque no?

I did like her playing and tone.

Re: Joanne Shaw Taylor

In my last band I played on the same bill as Joanne a couple of times and we shared the stage for a jam more than once. She's a great player and a really nice person - and gorgeous.

Re: Joanne Shaw Taylor

I'm digging it, but she'll get no where. Unfortunately.

I beg to differ, Bean. That is some awesome stuff she is delivering there. We will see, but I say she will be well recognized in the music scene.

How long has it been since you've seen a blues player make it? It's just not that big anymore, and it's certainly not what sells. John Mayer was the last one I can think of, and he went away from the blues thing to writing poppy little ballads.

I'm not saying that she's not good. I love the tone, the playing, the voice, the lyrics. It's all great. But unfortunately, I don't think she'll make it any further than being on a small label, having a small following, and playing semi-large shows. She might break out and get a music video and possibly a set on Letterman or something, but that's about the extent of it.

Re: Joanne Shaw Taylor

DLT - I hope you're right but sadly, I think Beandip has probably got the right perspective on this. I came across Joanne when I was playing with Will Harmonica Wilde and the Neptune Blues Band (look em up on Myspace or Youtube, I'm the old guy in the videos).

Will, like Joanne, is a young blues fanatic. He writes good songs, is a great singer and blows a really mean harp. Will he make it big time ? I doubt it, unless there is a radical alteration in the way the younger generation perceives music. We did some good gigs in some great venues but they were usually only about a third full and most of the audience were closer to my age than to Will's and the other young guys in the band.

Does Will care if he doesn't make it big ? Not really, he just wants to be able to live the life of a performing musician as long as he can make enough money to get by.

These people are GREAT performers but unless the younger generation start getting into Blues they're not going to have great careers.

How far did Kenny Wayne Shepard go? I'm not being a smartalec, I just don't know. I thought he was good but can only remember one of his songs getting mainstream coverage, Blue on black was a good song aswell.

He got rather large, but it wasn't his blues that was doing such. It was his more ZZ Top stuff that did it. Now he's found his own voice and does some awesome blues rock.
