just curious. I saw the rerun with him, chris layton, tommy shannon and buddy guy, and boy could that kid play! Really pumped me up to want to get better.

I know the strat, but what amp does he play through?

Re: John mayer rig?

He uses a Custom Reverb Signature model these days. On the Crossroads DVD, he ws using the same Custom Reverb that I use.

well, on chappelle's show, he played a strat though a blues jr.
white people CAN dance provided the right kind of music, and what music is that you ask? ELECTRIC GUITAR my friends!
lol, sorry, i had to.

and that was a protable rig. and scott is right, its the custom reverb sig..

Re: John mayer rig?

He had 2 two rock set-ups behind him for his performance @ the Grammys. The tone was so sweet & chimey, blood actually rushed into little seafoamer.

Re: John mayer rig?

Besides his good amps, the primary thing is a good strat and Alnico 5 vintage pickups like Surfers. The Mayer/SRV/KWS strat neck pickup is one of my favorite tones of all time, so you gotta have the right pickups!.....and solid alder strat/rosewood fretboard. That's the sound.

Hey I get it!

Grrross!

Re: John mayer rig?

How does he get the jangly clean/crunch tone? It's clean, but crunchy when played aggresive. Is it a clean set channel pushed a little with a Tubescreamer or other overdrive, or a slightly cruchy channel with rolled back volume knob on the guitar to clean it up? I've been trying to get something like this, but It always favors one side. Always either too clean, or too crunchy. Never the perfect blend of both like John Mayer, or SRV had.

Thanks! :)

Re: John mayer rig?

I thought he used vibro kings?

atleast he's next to them in last years fender mag

they kinda look like custom reverbs but i'm 80% sure he uses a vibro king with the extension cab

Re: John mayer rig?

Mayer's a total gear whore. He's currently in posession of 4 Dumbles.....that should tell you everything you need to know about his sound.

Re: John mayer rig?

ehh i dunno, I'm pretty sure the vibro king is his main amp, 60 watts, reverb & vibrato, 3 jensen pr10's, and then the extension cab is a 2x12 with v30's

stacked, they look EXACTLY like what he was using on crossroads

while on the subject, anyone ever played one? they seem like they'd crunch REAL well, seeing as he uses low output pickups, no mid boost, and STILL got all that overdrive

Re: John mayer rig?

I wouldn't recommend a classic voiced fender amp for 'crunch' unless you use a 4x12 loaded with celestions and you crank it.

Yo scott! What's the ballpark price for those two rocks? Any amp out there that gets close to the cleans on it? A single channel clean amp that compares to the two rock tone?

Re: John mayer rig?

fenders are meant to be cranked, and i'm always after that classic rock but harder tone, in a non-mesa kinda way

Re: John mayer rig?

depends on who you're talking about. The fender engineers intended the amps to stay clean:amps that dirtied up were considered crappy or cheap. Most players consult fender for their top of the line clean tones in amps like the deluxe and the twin. Most people who want a classic rock but harder tone go marshall, but you hate those dudes so what can you do?

Check out duncan amps tools i think it's called. Search it in google. You can download this tone stack EQ generator that shows the differences in marshall, fender, vox, etc tone stacks. Perhaps you can toy around with the fender curves to find a capacitor value that will help you achieve that crunch you want.
