John Norum pickups...

Hey.

Which pickups did John Norum from Europe use to get the sound on the track "The Final Countdown"?

Its ballsy, clear and still sounds single coily. And that ultra wet and round solo sound, how was that acheived?

Thanks :)

Re: John Norum pickups...

My guess is a JB through a modded plexi or 800. The keyboards playing with it help define some of the notes.

Use some chorus, reverb, delay for the wet round sound. It was probably doubled.

Re: John Norum pickups...

Hmm I though he used single coils in his strat?

He did. John's setup at that time was nearly identical to the guy you have listed in your sig.

i.e. Dimarzio HS3..Marshall 1987s...but John used a Boss SOD or Tubescreamer instead of a DOD 250.

Re: John Norum pickups...

Nice.

Guess there is going to go HS-3s in this strat then.

Did he use it in the neck and bridge, or in all three positions?

And thanks for the help.

NP :D I'm fuzzy on the neck & middle pickups. I'm certain they were HS series but not sure which (1/2/3) You could google it to find out for sure.

FYI, this was the same setup that carried over into "Total Control".

Re: John Norum pickups...

I found a document that says he uses Virtual Vintage Blues, and Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues, could this be true back in 86?

Re: John Norum pickups...

Haha okay.

What are the sonic differences between the HS-2 and 3?

And how would they be for a Blackmore vibe?

I found the HS3/YJMs to be PERFECT for the blackmore vibe in my malmsteen strat

The HS2s were a little warmer/weaker than the 3s going on memory...been many years since I played the 2s...

That said, I think a HS3 bridge and neck, or the YJM neck would suffice. That Norum tone was easily achievable with my Fender Malmsteen strat..really there are 4 guys whose strat tones I REALLY like...Malmsteen, Norum, Blackmore, and Uli Roth, and the HS3/YJMs did them all perfect.

Re: John Norum pickups...

Awesome.

Thanks alot mate, think I am gonna save up for two of them.

Re: John Norum pickups...

Lol.

Well talk about it on Saturday, they sound okay, so I might not change them. :D

Re: John Norum pickups...

Looking to get 3 pups for my strat and I love Norum also. Is the YM bridge super hot like a JB? I want my neck and middle to be strat sounding but not too weak.

Re: John Norum pickups...

JN uses a air zone and he also uses a BBQ in buckers for singles he uses
virtual heavy blues i hear

Re: John Norum pickups...

His Les Pauls are loaded with EMG 81's and 85's (ZW Sets). He doesn't really play the strats as much as he used to, so I have no idea what he uses in them now.

Re: John Norum pickups...

So whats hotter the YJM and HS-3 or Virtual Vintage Blues and Heavy Blues2
