John Petrucci Jazz 3 picks

Re: John Petrucci Jazz 3 picks

man, I get ya.
I lost a little ability to light-pick and do the airy near-the-bridge picking, but boy my accuracy and speed improved. I want to carry both the Jazz 3s and some bigger light gauge picks in case I want to switch up to a gentle tone.

Re: John Petrucci Jazz 3 picks

How are they different from standard Jazz III's and Eric Johnson Jazz III's?

They're a little bigger (not a lot), they have a really nice gripping surface on them and a bevelled picking surface that feels a bit smoother/the edge is sharper than a normal jazz 3. They're really fast feeling picks, they are some of the best feeling Jazz 3's there is. They have a much brighter, snappier tone than the EJ Jazz III's, and after a few weeks of using the JP I went back to the EJ because the snappy tone was getting on my nerves.

They are really nice and I have been using the JPs more again lately. They create nice tones and the size is right.

Re: John Petrucci Jazz 3 picks

Yeah, they're great picks. I grabbed some to try out when I was doing some Christmas shopping and liked them enough to quit using my Max-Grip Jazz IIIs.

Re: John Petrucci Jazz 3 picks

I'd almost settled on the Petrucci jazz III but then,,,

i learned of a pick I've been waiting for dunlop to make for a couple of years now. I ordered a 72 pack on ebay 'cause no one else had any in stock...

FINALLY XL JAZZ III in TORTEX!!! I'm so excited, my quest for the perfect pick has come to an end. (i know because i fashioned one a while back from a tortex TIII) I got the the 1mm but they come in these gauges .73, .88, 1.0, 1.35, 1.5

Re: John Petrucci Jazz 3 picks

I got a 6-pack of those JP picks about 2 weeks ago, and they're just great. Perhaps my new favourite pick, very well sized and almost never slip. I strongly recommend them.

Re: John Petrucci Jazz 3 picks

I started to adopt the Jazz III lately. I don't know why or how, but I find that sweeping it easier with the jazz. It's easier to play complex stuff. but when I wanna 'rock 'n rolllllllllll' I just use my old purple tortex. Never in a million years would I have thought I'd swap out my tortex.

Re: John Petrucci Jazz 3 picks

I've been using the Max Grip J3's, the carbon fiber is awesome. I can do all the toans

Re: John Petrucci Jazz 3 picks

I too have recently fallen in love with the Jazz 3, but not the petrucci ones, the carbon ones!

I can't even play Mary had a little lamb with the picks I have been playing exclusively for the last 20 years!!!

Luvs the J3's

Re: John Petrucci Jazz 3 picks

I've been using the JP 3's for about a year now I definitely prefer them to the standard Jazz III. The tone is brighter, the originals are dull sounding. Though recently noticed that the once they are worn out they will start to get filed down and flat looking and catch on the strings. I didn't notice until I was practicing some sweeps and economy picking that it wasn't gliding smoothly across the strings. I was starting to get frustrated. But then I notice I was holding a really worn out pick. I have like 2 dozen in a Seymour Duncan pickup tray so I went through them all and threw away the used up ones. Looks like I ground down a few! Haha.
Though I just went ahead and ordered a $30 Red Bear Big Jazzer which will be here tomorrow. So I will see how that compares...

Re: John Petrucci Jazz 3 picks

Would like to hear what you think of the Red Bear. Isn't the Big Jazzer the model that Guthrie Govin and Dweezel Zappa use?

Re: John Petrucci Jazz 3 picks

Yep that is the one. I got it yesterday and WOW! Forget anything I said about the Jazz III's. I'm over them rather quickly. I don't want to use another pick again. The Red Bear is the smoothest pick ever. I'll gladly pay $30 again in the future. The pick is like crack. Once you try it, your're hooked.

Re: John Petrucci Jazz 3 picks

Sometimes I wonder how in the world John played all those years before his signature pedals, picks, pickups, and about 7,356 variations on his signature guitars. :D
