Does anyone know what kind of pickups Judas Priest used -especially for bridge buckers back in the Screaming for Vengance days???? anyone know what they used before that even in the 70s? Man I love that intro tone to Break these Chains.

thx

Superdistortion in Tiptons Strat, stock in his SG I think until Defenders era.

KK was stock and a Superdistortion in one of the Vs

I always thought I heard a JB like tone in their stuff.

Re: Judas Priest pickups back in the day

they switched over to EMGs around the turbo era, tons of gain, and tons of rack gear. ..and the sound went to poopie IMO. I know some people like it, but I much prefer that raw guitar into a couple stompers, into the amp, and throw some analog/tape echo 70s/early 80s thing.

Maiden ended up doing the same thing, but it wasn't quite as bad.

That Ace solo is a Super Distortion?

Yup. He's been using the Super Distortion since close to when it came out. Gotta remember, he also used Marshall JMP's back then, cranked to the hilt. That's a big part of his sound. The SuperD just slammed the front end harder.

That aint 100% true... Tipton got his first Hamer with a EMG 81 in 1984, and it was used alot on Defenders. Downing was first like 1986 or so I think :) ;)

I like the Painkiller guitar tones alot though. :)

And that right there is one reason why I love the Super Distortion. The others are Iron Maiden and Ace Frehley. Oh yeah, Jeff convincing me to finally just get one helped. :D

And those are all great reasons!

Re: Judas Priest pickups back in the day

ive often heard people say they used the X2N on painkiller as well as the JB. is this true?

What humbuckers did they use in the neck position?

My favorite tone of theirs is on Defenders Of The Faith album. Like the beginning of The Sentinel and the Love Bites song.

I don't hear a Dimarzio Super Distortion on those songs. ???

SuperD is all over DOTF. The beginning of Sentinel sounds exactly like a SuperD to me-and Freewheel Burning has plenty of it as well.

Neck pickups would be T-tops (KKs Vs, Tiptons SG special), stock strat (KK), and Tipton either had a SuperD or a Dimarzio PAF in the neck of his black strat with the mirror pickguard. It sounds like a SuperD to me on Unleashed in the East- very thick and not very PAF-ish-but he could have changed it by DOTF.

Re: Judas Priest pickups back in the day

Tipton's first EMG was a 58, not an 81. I don't even think the 81 was around in 1984.

the 81 was around (started in '79 according to wikipedia), but yeah tipton had a 58 in the bridge of his SG

i didnt think either of them started using mostly 81s until somewhere in the ripper owens period. ive seen a gajillion pictures of them through the years, and up until that point, the vast majority of their guitars had passives in them.
