Just bought this old Guild Acoustic...

the serial # is 169168, which lists it as being made near the end of 1977. Its a standard dreadnaught body, and has no markings as to a model #. So does anyone know of the models back then?

btw, i bought it off a friend at work who got it for free and didnt want it, paid only 75 dollars :).

Re: Just bought this old Guild Acoustic...

Sounds like a good score. Guilds are one of the most under rated guitars out there. IF it goes back to 1977 It was probably made in Waverly Rhode Island, IMO that was when Guild was making great guitars. A photo would help! IF it is a Dreadnaught size it would depend on what kind of wood it is made from to determine the model. D25's are Mahogony D50's are Rosewood and a D55 is a more ornate model of the D50, it has fancier inlays and they used a better grade of wood with it. The may have also had a model made from maple, I don't remember off the top of my head, but it don't matter to much you have a really fine acoustic for very little money. Good luck with it!!

A few more details to add to what Bludave wrote above. The dreadnought Guilds available in 1977 were:

D-25 - Mahogany sides and arched mahogany back with mahogany shaded spruce top, gold silk screened peghead logo and rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays.

D-35 - Pretty much the same as the -25 except with unshaded spruce top.

D-40 - Like D-35 but with ivoroid body binding, 3 piece neck, Grover tuners and Chesterfield headstock inlay. (This is the model Richie Havens played at Woodstock).

D-44M - Like D-40 but with maple sides and back and ebony fingerboard.

D-50 - Like D-40 but with rosewood back & sides and ebony fingerboard & bridge.

D-50 - Like D-50 but with bound neck and headstock, "G-shield" logo inlay on headstock and mother of pearl fingerboard inlays.

1977 Guilds were built in Westerly, R.I.

Re: Just bought this old Guild Acoustic...

I have to diagree with all of you. The late 70's were the worst guitars they made. To save you the trouble of being diapointed I will, out of the kindness of my heart, send you the $75 and you send it my way. :)

??? I can't imagine Guild ever making a bad guitar. For $75, you just stole a really good deal no matter what the model or even how it looks!

I think he's being sarcastic ;)

Sorry to derail the thread, but Youngpup, how do you like the Dean Chafin Del Sol?

Guilds are great guitars and that was a steal!

Chris I have been so busy I have only been able to play it a little bit, but what I have played I have liked very much. I am going to try a Seth in the neck after a while. Iwas very happy with the neck and it sound very jazzy, and smooth, through an acoustic amp. Did you read the post I made for the Duotone of my sister's?

I can only raise so many BS flags to show my sarcasism. I would have broke my leg jumping on that deal.

Re: Just bought this old Guild Acoustic...

cool man, i was interested in a guild jumbo maple, they do make good guitars! Unfortunately Guild discontinued the guitar i want, and there is something similiar made my gibson the j185 blues electro cutaway, but im not paying 4 grand for that, so i;; just settle for a taylor non maple :(
