Just got my new $80 attenuator -- The Power Plug

Re: Just got my new $80 attenuator -- The Power Plug

Will do! They (ordered 2 cuz the second one is cheaper) will arrive on the second.. Cant wait to try it with my JCM especially, but also my Tweaker.

Red label, thanks SO much for turning me on to these!!! I ordered 2 and got them yesterday. (was at work) So, I tried em today and they work great! I tried running one and both in a chain on both my Tweaker and JCM800. The tone is colored only EVER so Slightly with both going. But that really cuts down the volume.. Im really enjoying my JCM more cuz I can get the dynamics out of it now and its not fizzy like it can be turned so low.. Plus the response to the vol control on the guitar is awesome. Up and its crunch crunch scream!! down, its warm and sweet.. Plus, I can get great harmonic squeals. Basically Ive got the good tone of the amp in the sweet zone, but my kids can hear the tv in the other room..
Im stoked!! Plus, they are very inexpensive, AND dont require batteries or a plug in. Thanks again!

No problem BR. Glad it worked for you! I'm always a little nervous when recommending something like this, because maybe the tone sucks and I somehow really didn't get the memo. So I'm glad I could help a fellow forum member out and also really glad to be reassured that I'm not tone deaf! :D

Hmmm, didn't Guitar Player do a DIY section on how to build one of these not long ago? I'll have to dig through my back issues.

*EDIT* Here is a schematic for a load box, I'll try to find the attenuator project later: http://www.aikenamps.com/DummyLoad.pdf

*EDIT2*Here's the DIY attenuator article: http://www.guitarplayer.com/article/power-attenuator-project/August-2010/116279

Looking at the gut shot of the Recycled Audio attenuator, it seems to be this circuit, there is no "frequency compensation" as the ebay ad says, it is purely resistive attenuation. That said, it should work great and the nice extruded aluminum case not to mention having it pre-built is worth the cost, unless you are a hard core DIY'er.

I've had great results with mine.. I actually bought 2. With my JCM800, one didnt get me quiet enough to please the family, so I was running 2 of them in a chain and that worked great!

I'm still good with mine -- althought I don't use it all that often anymore because I found a setting on my Shiva that it sounds great at at reasonable volume without being attenuated. I run a Fulltone OCD V4 in front of it like I would my old TS9 (gain = 2, volume = 10) to push the front end. Then on the OD channel of my amp I'm running the gain at 5, channel vol at 6, and master around 2-3. This is pushing the amp just enough to sound great but not be too crazy loud. Anything less than 2 on the master vol and I'd need to use the attenuator.
